Time to actually get off my ass & make my '48 Dodge road worthy again....Hit the button, and all I get is a whirring noise, so I'm guessing the bendix is stuck & not popping out to engage the flywheel, car's been sitting for a long time, like 10 years now.... I know they used the flathead in cars until 1959, my question is, how interchangeable are the starters? Has anyone found something else that interchanges? I'm not concerned about authenticity here, just what will work.... I did a 12 volt conversion, kept the original starter, always worked no problems. Thanks!

  2. Pull it out and get it rebuilt

Or pull it out and clean it up
Probably just gummed up from sitting or maybe something crawled inside and died

Yeah, kinda thinking that's the starting point.....never thought about the something crawling in & dying angle, I know there were mice in my dad's garage, which is where it was stored....would be nice if there was some kind of little known trick, like an old Granada or Falcon unit bolting in....

Doesn’t that have a solenoid on the starter, not a Bendix?

Thought the Bendix unit was the assembly that slid in & out....at least that's the impression I get when I look the part up on eBay....

That’s as I know it too. My fork lift has a FH Dodge engine and the starter was doing the spin, no engage, I put the new assy in as your pic shows to fix it.

Edit: But make sure you don’t have a bad spot on the ring gear though.
