I pulled these off of a 1948 Ford front axle today and realized 1) they are different, and 2) they have been drilled to 5x4.5" bolt pattern. I pulled the axle off of a '48 Ford but that was close to 20 years ago. I'm thinking the drum on the left is original, the one on the right is not? (I tapped the one lug bolt out with a couple taps on a br*** rod, the others wouldn't budge.) I'm in the mock-up stage right now so I'm not looking at buying new ones yet, couldn't I just get two used '48 Ford drums with the 5x5.5" bolt pattern to replace these? The axle is going under a '34 Chevy with a Ford 9" out of a '76 Bronco on the rear. Larry
You could get a new Boling Bros drum & some press in studs for the one on the right. The only drums for the one on the left are not always the best quality and not always available imports. Good idea would be to find another '40 type hub like the one on the right and go from there.
It has been a while but I would look at swap meets for useable drums and/or place a wanted ad. Check diameter, 12.060 should max and the less oversize the better. I used two carry a 12 inch rod to check the drums at meets. The ones with the hub on the inside are prewar and the ones with the hubs on the outside are post war. Charlie Stephens
Ok, so the one on the left is post war, the one on the right is prewar. That's awesome. Thank you all. Larry
