Here's the front. Bigger wheels don't always look better, and more chop doesn't either!

I just thought about something, if you made a hardtop on a four door, you would have no way to support the post that the doors latch to.It would wobble in the middle.

This post has gotten an incredible response. I have heard that Flamedabone has gotten back into the garage and has once again started working on his Merc..

the one merc with the big chop has the window upside down too so it makes the rear look a little different

i see what you mean on that one. The one i saw (i though they said it was a 7) didn't have that dip in the c piller it looked smooth.

whats the chop on yours at bad bob?

  9. 4 1/2". Shoeboxes look good with a slanted chop, but IMO,Mercs look better with a traditional even chop. It depends on what "look",your looking for. I draw my opinion from the cars I liked in the 50's. Not by the cars I see today, but that doesn't mean todays cars don't look good. Many guys like NO rain gutters. I like the way they look with the drip rails. Window placement is important also. some guys try to leave the window in the same location, but layed down. Mine was moved forward. 51's are even harder, ask slddnmatt,he loves 51's.

i agree about the drip rails i think it completes the line on a two door (non-hard top). I specifically didn't get a 51 because I don't liek how they look from the side (sorry slddnmatt)

as far as height goes, how low do you think this is it has to be close to 6 or 7 and isnt having that dip problem in the rear...

    thanks

  11. That's a really nice looking car. There's always exceptions to the rule. I think it's kinda low though. Gotta be hard to see out of.

The metal looks good. The lack of attention to the window trim sucks!(green one)
Oh and Bob...That primered merc on the previous page has an upside down back windod which contributes to that dip.

  16. Yea,that's what slddnmatt said too. Funny how there can be sooo many variations on a chopped Mercury. I never gave it much thought until I saw a bad one parked by me at the Primer Nats, last year. I wanted to give slddnmatt a big" wet one",for his work!

Here's what we just picked up for my mom. Yeah, I said my mom. She's been wanting an older ride for awhile. So I traded her mid 80's Chevy truck for this the other day.

Now I gotta really get my 51 Chevy back on the road. I can't imagine the kinda crap I'll have to take from the other guys in our club. My 63 year old mom out cruising around while my car is still in pieces.

I dont think anyone is going to question if its for your Mom or not...who cares, more power to her.

But for real? You traded a mid 80s Chevy truck for a 51 Merc?!?? Guy got any more Mercs and need another mid 80s Chevy truck? :)

For real. I put an ad on craigs list wanting to trade for a "classic" and he replied. To be fair, the truck was slick. But still the probability of that ever happpening again is real slim. I used up all my car swap karma getting a deal for someone besides myself.

You are so correct. Even thumbing through these pictures, I found that I'm drawn in by a lower chop on a hardtop and a slightly less radical chop with the post. Just the way it pleases my eye.
