Here is a picture of my 50. This was my first chop job. Bought the Merc for $1000.00, put a very nasty 327 Chevy along with a muncie 4 spd(after I blew up the flathead... ). The car was a strong runner. Sold it in 1980 for $3850.00(thought I made a killing...). This pic was taken about 15 years (and three owner's later). Same motor, same interior,Buick Riv side trim. Kelsey Martin had just completly gone over the body, installed the caddy tail lights and installed AC in the car. Soon as he was finished,I got the car back to my shop to replace the rear axle bearings(original rear end still hanging in there after much abuse!). Sold shortly after this picture was taken for $38K ....who would have ever guessed these Mercs would bring this kind of dough !!!!
What an awesome thread. I just love this Forum......... Well I can't match most of these awsome mercs on here but here goes. My humble '51 Merc. Since sold. Actually traded it for a 427 Impala.. bad bad bad.. 302 and C4. lakes and low. Awesome mild pink with flames. (photo faded in the sun) Beautiful red and white plted uphostery. Just an all round cool ride. Had a '49 befor this one. Just bought a '49 Lincoln coupe to get me back ino it...
'Nuther quick update... Finished the chop... Making all the vent wings, garnish mouldings and window stainless. (I have been avoiding it, but it has to be done..) See ya, -Abone.
Amazing thread. Anyone around Chicago able to make window trim/mouldings? I bought this one recently, will be doing some stuff on it... Click on pic to see the other pics... Also if anyone is willing to suffer thru some profoundly basic q's let me know I have a million of them.
PM me. I'll answer any questions you have, assuming I have the answers,LOL!!! You can start with "What don't you like about my Merc",HA HA HA!
I just sent him a PM before I posted that response,so he knows I was just playing with him. I'm not being my USUAL dick. He said he had some questions,so I offered to help him. For the record...I didn't buy a done car. I bought a partially done car and had it chopped and painted by slddnmatt, who found the car for me. I sent PSJ some suggestions for his car, which I think, isn't a bad looking car.
That thing NEEDS the 80s painted mirrors! You can start a thread with Merc questions, you should find the help you need. Sam, didn't you buy a running, driving, subframed solid 50 Merc 2 dr?
Hey Prostock John, The cut on the car aint half bad!PM me for any questions.Your roof looks like it was chopped using the Tommy Steadman video tape!...but probably just a similar look!
Trash the bumpers, pick a well placed grille of your choica and throw a set of tucked in traditional rolling stock on it and you got yerself a hitter!
Thats funny. The car really doesnt share much in common with Daves old Merc, but for some reason I thought the SAME thing! I think its the second pic, Id seen that pic of his Merc in front of his shop so many times I guess any chopped 51 at that angle reminds me of his car.
yeah and ive had to redo everything since ive got it...and it wasnt solid. lets see, what have i dont to it in the past 5 months that i have owned it... ...lowered it, complete re-wire, swapped the rims and tires, swapped out the old seats, rear end swap, shaved door handles, frenched headlights, chopped the top, slanted b pillars, shaved the front parking ,housings(that were bondod over), shaved the taillights, repairing the rust in the lower doors, repaired previous damage to drivers side fender(wasnt visable in pics,it was bowed ) fixed lil dents and dings all over the car,, im sure there are alot of lil things i'm forgetting,,but maybe you get the drift... i think thats a big difference than buying one done...
I purposly told Matt NOT to finish the car so I could do it myself. What have I done since getting it; rewired it fixed the front and rear suspension new oilpan new shifter flamed it new grill new brakes redid fuel lines Still to do; stereo interior tires rear gears fix brakelights drive the shit out of it!!!! Not much....Depends on your definition of "done",Sam.
My Merc was the inspiration(at least partly) for Dave,s. One thing that set Dave's apart from the rest was the use of a lexan( or plexiglass) rear window. Didn't have the bubble of the glass to disrupt the flow of the roof line.
Bob, my mistake ,i was under the impresion you bought it way,(other than having someone paint flames and changing the grille of course) i didnt realize you had done all the other things to it! take care
I'm not taking credit for any of the hard work Matt did on the car. He's one of the best around these parts...The things I had to fix were no fault of Matts,BTW!!! This is the way slddnmatt found it! Chopped it,painted it,got it running, than I picked it up......and ran out of gas on the way home,LOL!!!!!
Here's one from Edmonton that if you look close, you'll see some serious metal work going in to the subtle section job. Not a trick photo of owner in front of the car---
Its really nice that that guy did all that work.Im sure hes a nice guy.....................................................................................................I hope it was a Monarch and not a Merc
