This one was at a show I went to last weekend...fella was friends with the guy who owned my Merc since 1952, he has done 4 chopped '49-'51s himself, and 3 are in a town that has about 500 people in it. Hopefully I'll see them all in a couple weeks at a cruise/show there.
@patsurf DETROIT, Dec. 15 1948—Fire tonight destroyed 200 Mercury cars on the final assembly line in “B” building of the Ford Motor Company's Rouge plant. The loss exceeded $500,000. While the flames were at their height, employes fastened wheels on twenty other Mercurys and pushed them off the assembly line. They also saved ten Fords on a parallel line. A company spokesman estimated the car loss at $480,000. Damage to the building and stock ran the total well over $500,000.
