It may be Glad Ellis' Valley Custom built Mercury. Cadillac top mated to the Merc body. However i thought this car was destroyed before narrow white walls were popular. Mick
Glad Ellis's was a convertible with a Cadillac top. It had stainless trim around the edge of the roof, that car doesn't appear to have. Also Glad's car had stainless trim on the C-pillar.
You're right Sancho, I was answering off the top of my head, didn't have a pic of Glad's Merc handy. Mick
The hardtopped car is so tantalizing, details are just a little too fuzzy, sure looks like it's got a '51 rear bumper and washboard trim, but the grille surround and front bumper look earlier. It kinda looks like it's got a '51 Merc rear window too, but too hard to tell. Could possibly have been made with convertible doors and custom quarter windows, but really would love to hear more.
Something I’ve often wondered....anybody know who was involved in the design of the 49-51 Mercurys? Was it’s small group of designers or....just one talented guy or gal. The 48 Fords and Merc’s were completely different from the 49-51’s and I understand that the design of the Fords helped save FOMOCO, did design of the Merc do the same? Any thoughts? There is a lot of knowledge on the HAMB. Sent from my iPad using H.A.M.B.
Kool questions, Hopefully we will get some answers, Hopefully this afternoon I'll have time to look around...
I Would like to post a few pic's of my 51 merc that i chopped and built my self except the paint job. Can't beat the custom Mercs
Thanks to @the-rodster, one of our own members, I found this article he researched back in January 2013. Very much info on the design of the 49 Ford /Merc. The article is informative and lengthy and he credits howstuffworks.com for the article and pictures which I can’t see. Still no clear cut determination for who actually was responsible for the overall design but some really good incite. Lots of talented engineers no doubt....Leave it to a fellow H.A.M.B.er be be on the cutting edge of this thing we love. Thank you again @the-rodster. Beautiful. And from the Keystone State too boot. Think CCR 2020 @ Indy. Pennsylvania is pretty well represented at this event/show. Now if we can just kill this virus in time for the Big show! Later[emoji41]Lou. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I’ve been working on getting this 49 back on the road. Not too far off. Apparently sitting for 30+ years did a number on the wiring harness. Basically falls apart when touched. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
