Nice Merc. I saw that car at the CCR last year and spoke to the owner. I think he really wanted a Hudson as he used 48 Hudson tail lights. I mentioned to him that my 48 Hudson had early Merc tail lights and so I went home and changed the rear to fit 48 Hudson tail lights as they looked so good on his Merc. Added over riders that incorporated the indicators.
Dave Wolk is a great guy and a very talented builder. The '48 Hudson Tail light bezels on his Mercury are Kustom made. Only two sets out there, McPhail has the other set on his '41 Buick.
Yes Mickey I heard about his custom made Hudson lights. The original ones have different dimensions on the chrome bezel side to side to allow them to sit on the Hudson body but that wouldn't work on the flat fenders on a Mercury. Here is a photo looking down to show the difference. He had his made to have equal sides. We slightly changed the position on mine to have them lower on the fender and more central on the body seam.A fair bit of work to do it.
One of my favorites too. Sorry that that version will soon be lost forever, but your Merc was once a magazine car to in a very different incarnation {I like your version a lot better! } But it is the current owners car and his vision of a custom Merc, so more power to him. My own Merc no longer represents the mild un chopped custom I acquired in 1996 and that the previous owner drove since he took it from a stock shit green flat head powered original in to a sbc 327 4spd in 1973. I am the 3rd owner and each owner had a different idea what a 51 Merc should look like and it is now a 428 fe , 4 speed no skirt chopped, frenched and shaved mag wheeled off topic version of what I would have built in high school in 1971 to 73 right down to the pistol grip Mopar E body shifter! And the chassis is pure 90's and that's why I never post pic of it here! That's why we call it customizing!!!! Make them your own!! lol Larry
Thanks for the update, I love traditional Kustoms. Kool to see them built out of the norm. This Merc has a lot of new ideas. I borrowed how he did his shifter. It was too kool of an idea..... I get pictures deleted that don’t fit the HAMB requirements. I respect that but when I see something kool I just have to share it. When i saw this Merc in Custom Rodder it had a lot of kool ideas. I’m looking forward to seeing the next chapter. I know it will be a kool one... Thanks for the kind words about my Merc. Embarrassed that you remember seeing it in it’s ugly state. Lol! If ya don’t mind, Message me pics of your Merc. I’d like to see them.. Happy Trails, Mick Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
