I can't see the picture as I'm not part of the Ford barn. Maybe you could post it up. I've got a 50 merc motor with a truck rear sump oil Pan and I've been putting 5 qt in with an oil filter. And it's just below the full mark.
Here's the dip stick photo info. posted on Fordbarn. Does your dip stick have the letter M stamped on it like the one shown below? I know there is lots of varying information out there but, I have found the following to be true while changing my oil. For those who are running an 8BA Ford V8 or a 49-51 Merc engine with a 1949-51 Mercury rear sump oil pan and correct matching dip stick, here's the correct oil level readings. As you know the Ford and Merc blocks are the same except for the larger bore of the Merc. My rear sump oil pan is from a complete stock 1950 Merc engine that I bought in 1967. The Merc engine block was replaced with a stock 1953 Ford engine block in 1971 and I continued to use the Merc oil pan and dip stick to the present day. The 1949-51 Lincoln Mercury Overhaul Manual Vol. 1 states as follows on page 34: Engine oil: Dry (including filter)................. 6 qts. Refill: ............................................................ 5 qts.
Hi Jim- Are you running the Merc "windage tray" pan? I am in my 8CM engine in the '41 Merc and have found the same capacities as you have. I have a remarked dipstick in mine since the original was too damaged to use. Terry
Yes, my Merc oil pan has the stock OEM "windage tray". Using a piece of 1/8 in. dia solder with the dip stick tube threaded into the oil pan flange, I measured the length of the dip stick tube from the top of the mounting flange into which the threaded dipstick tube screws to the top of the dip stick tube and found that measurement to be 9 3/4 inches. I am sure this is the correct OEM dip stick tube.
