Can someone educate me on how to remove the driveshaft from a 49' Chevy P/U. We are pulling the motor and ****** as a unit, It looks like the driveshaft tube and rear axle are one piece. The truck has the original 6 cyl

    Thanks.......

Do a search here or a chevy truck supplier of parts for your year and they will usually have a exploded view of what you need. Or just start taking bolts out and you will see the light, they are really simple. They were also called torque tubes. Good Luck

There is a ball shaped connection at the rear of the transmission/front of torque tube and it has a retainer plate that bolts to the transmission housing...........4 or 6 bolts, can't remember which...........remove those bolts and the ball connecter should slip rearward revealing the u-joint. If I recall correctly, the u-joint has to be unbolted, four bolts, two per side, and it will slip apart. After the trans mount to the crossmember is unbolted, and of course the engine mounts, it should be possible to remove the engine/trans ***embly.

Just loosen the "knurled ring" for the seal/slip joint, and pull everything right out. NO real need to unbolt anything, if all you want is to pull the engine/trans as a unit. Just be prepared for the torque tube to drop once separated. Better remove the speedo cable/drive also. Butch/56sedandelivery.

  9. Jeeze, how do you start taking something apart without at least looking at a manual of some sort to have some clue wtf you're doing? I mean, I've done that before, but at the time I was 13 and didn't know any better.

Chevy car shop manuals are available online, I don't know if trucks are, but the procedure to take apart the torque ball on the rear of the trans is similar.

If you're putting a V8 in there, you're going to need to swap out the rearend for an open drive from a later model vehicle of some sort -

A bit harsh, don't you think? Ever thought that maybe the guy has never messed with a torque tube vehicle before? Heck, maybe he's only 13. There is no age requirement here.
