I am in the process of restoring a 1949 chevy convertible. The car needs A new front baking plate with cylinders and brake pad also the spindle, hub and drums. I usually can find most parts for all my vintage cars, but I have done a thorough search and can not find these parts. Please let me know where I can find them.
Where are you located? I may actually have some near mint with wheel cylinders plates when I disc brake swap my 53 Bel Air. I prefer to not ship though
Sorry my mistake. It is a 1949 Chevy convertible. I need to get the entire front suspension , steering box, and brake drums, spindles, hub and baking plate, cylinders. Thank you all for the reply.
Yes I own a 1935 Ford convertible, avatar photo, and a 1959 Corvette FI. This is a different car a 1949 Chevy and I am located in Miami Florida.
call french lake auto parts, they will have what you need, shipping will be a killer though, are there no salvage yards in your area? there is nobody making those parts new, except for the brake cylinders, are all of these parts missing on your car??? I fixed the title to 49 https://www.frenchlakeautoparts.com/
Yup, National chevy is owned by my friend Paul Nimis. they have new and used parts for these cars and are super nice people......
Moriarity thank you so much for correcting the title. The car is a 1949 Chevy convertible. it belongs to a good friend of mine, an Italian business man that lives in Florence Italy but spends a lot of time traveling to Cuba. He has two houses in Cuba and the 1949 chevy and a 1954 Chevy. He is restoring the 1949 Chevy. The front suspension including the spindles, hubs brake drums are all shot. I am helping him find the parts that then will be shipped to Cuba. I have located the tie rods, Steering gear repair kit, the steering knuckle arm, the steering idler third arm repair kit, the drag link. I am missing the Pitman arm, the brake drums (cars five studs), the Hub with bearing and seals (car five studs). There are several hubs and drums but all are six stud trucks. There are a lot of parts for trucks but not passenger cars. I will reach out to the National Chevy and French Lakes auto parts as you guys have suggested. A question: The six bolt drum and hub are for trucks? The five for cars? Yes I have done a thorough search in Ebay and found some parts but not the ones I am missing.
I’ve seen a few complete front ends cheap from guys doing what they call “upgrades” Like this example Same with complete frames.
Get on Facebook marketplace and look up Adam Hatmaker from Jacksboro TN. He has a complete 1949 coupe with a trashed body but with everything you need for $900. Buy it and take everything of use and ship to Cuba.
You should be able to get all of these parts new from the usual suppliers, except possibly the spindles. I just did a quick search and The Filling Station has all of those parts, but only 2" drop spindles. I'm sure National Chevy does, too. You can also try HAMBer Owens Salvage in TX.
If you go on marketplace with some time I would think a complete front end will show up when some hot rodder “up grades” his car with a m2.
French Lake Auto Parts Rocks! The transmissions that donated parts for my mid-engine Model A all came from them. Good people.
One problem we run into when someone poses a question like this is that 70 percent of of the people assume and post information that is not correct 49 Chevrolet brakes are not like 54/ 59 or so Corvette. 49 Chevrolet brakes are HUCK brakes. Bendix brakes didn't show up until 1951. Roberto you can use 1949 or 1950 Chevy car brakes if you want to stay 100% original. Those are Huck brakes and those two years are by themselves. 1951 and later backing plates will work but they are Bendix brakes and are different. The Filling station in Oregon is a good source Filling Station Chevrolet & GMC Quality Reproduction Parts Sometimes on their site the more generic of a search you do the better you do. They show just about every mechanical part that you might want but my experience is that you may have to wait until they get said part in on a stock order before they ship it to you. Chevs of the 40's is an excellent source but won't be the least expensive. Chevs of the 40's | 1937-1954 Chevrolet Classic Restoration Parts for Cars & Trucks (chevsofthe40s.com) Rock Auto is a source I always check for mechanical parts RockAuto Folks, REMEMBER, ACTUALLY READ THE QUESTION BEFORE YOU ANSWER then actually do your research rather than frigging assume that you know the damned answer.
Thank you all for your response. Mr48chev thank you. I have found a lot of the parts at Chevs of the 40s. The drums are not available; however National Chevy (Minnesota) carry them but are not in stock, they were going to order it. Also they said they might have used spindles and hubs. I have to call them next Monday. Hubs and spindles according to all the stores have not been reproduced.
You need to be very careful that you aren't breaking any laws here. There are export restrictions to Cuba that you may be violating. Even if your friend takes the items to Cuba himself, you may be aiding and abetting a federal crime. Research this thoroughly before you get yourself, your friend, or the vendors in trouble.
30s-70s GM parts Buy-Sell-Trade for the last 51 years. 503 771 9416 or 800 886-7277 oldcarpartsor.com 7525 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, Oregon 97206 I've been buying from these guys since they first started. Excellent, and very knowledgeable too.
You can ship stuff to Cuba, generally speaking there are many outfits in Miami that go back and forth with shipments. We do the same thing Venezuela, as long as you have proof of declared value to accompany the items you’re going to be okay. Whoever this Italian guy is, I’m pretty sure he has a freight forwarder who can get what he needs through Cuban customs. The US government is only going to be interested in dual purpose and I don’t think 1949 Chevy parts would be a ITAR violation.
Yes it is no problem. There are many legitimate commercial business in Miami that ship regularly to Cuba. It has to clear Cuban Customs and pay duties but it very cheap and no problem. I did find all the parts I was looking for with the exception of the front brake drums and the hubs. I did talk to National Chevy in Minessota and they told me they have the drums but are out of stock. They were going to order them. Also they are going to see if they can get me used hubs. I have to call Monday as it is snowing very badly over there. Again thank you so much for all your help. Thanks to the information you provided I was able to get most of the parts.
