FINALLY!!!!!!!! I got my project car and got it home. I got the darn thing running after changing all the plugs, wires, points, condensor, and coil. Timed it accordingly and after many attempts it fired up with gas attached in a small marine container with a hose running to the pump. But now, the solenoid seems to lock and just click after trying to start it up a few times. Could this be because it has gotten hot or that it is just bad? If I took it off the starter and took the top off and cleaned it well and cleaned and derusted the terminals, would that help any? Anyone else that has a late 40s chevy with information that could help a first timer, please fell free to email me... stoneywynn@yahoo.com Last night I got it fired up and then my wife came running out into the garage screaming, "make it quit, make it quit"... I tried to turn the switch off but it just kept running. I had to disconnect the battery and then it quit. After it stopped, I heard every smoke detector in the house was going off. I was cracking up. Anyway, anuone that can explain the "key switch to me" would be helpful. thanks and have a great day.
I'll have to get some downloaded this weekend. I need to tear out what's left of the headliner and the flooring cover. I've got some very basic repair panels in the front floorboards presently. I can't seem to find a rear bumper from that year, but I'm seriously thinking about just going to the junkyard and finding one that would look good on there. What size sheetmetal would be the best for the repair panels in the floorboards and the best for patching the area right below the trunk?
Is it still 6 volts? or has it been changed to 12v? Starter solenoid problems can be caused by bad grounds. On my 51 I cleaned up some wiring going to the coil and didn't know at the time but I took out a diode in one of the splices, when I went to turn the car off it kept on running. Learned something new.
