Hi, do any 49-51 merc owners have a battery recommendation for a 12v conversion?

Group 34, 35, 75, etc....? I'd like to get one that fits the original battery box the best. I know they vary in size and cca depending on which one you go with.

    Thank you

Why not simply head to the nearest battery supply armed with the dimensions you require?

    Bigblue61 and GreenMonster48 like this.
  3. group 31 should do it:rolleyes:

a few years back i did a `49 Ford and i believe i used a group 24 in the stock location? i don't recall modifying the battery box

you car probably came with a group 1 or 2......as petejoe said , compare the sizes. O'Reillys battery catalog has all the batteries listed by size

keep in mind that there are batteries with the +/- terminals swapped....that can help out on running battery cables

Thanks for the feedback, I tried the local auto parts store. Selection was low and not many to choose from. I'll give the group 31 a shot.

  5. group 31 was a joke , that's for big tractors/equipment/trucks etc

you car probably came with a group 1 or 2 6 volt battery

    group 1 is 9" long , 6-7/8 wide , 8-3/4 high
    group 2 is 10-3/8" long , 6-7/8 wide , 8-3/4 high

    a group 24 12 volt battery is 11" long , 6-5/8 wide , 9-1/4 high

  6. Costco might have a better selection (and price).

  7. I just went through this, for my '51 Chevy. I went online, got ALL the length, width and height measurements shown on CHARTS, for the different groups.

    LOOK HERE. http://www.batteryweb.com/bci.cfm

i just take my battery box to the local auto zone and they find one for me. my '72 nova, for instance, took a hyundai battery--posts were switched, but i just got different cables!
