I wouldn't pay more than $1k. Like you said, unless it was a Ford.

people can call the 49 and 50 plymouths ugly all they want. we drive our 50 4 door everywhere and it gets A LOT of attention from car people. With the right color and a good job on it; they get attention.A convert will really get attention. Theyre not desireable cars but they are a lot of fun, good fuel mileage AND reliable. very cool

I would go $4k on that. But then again, I'm from Buffalo NY and most of the cool old stuff like that has been eaten so badly by salt, that it looks like a great deal to me, if it were local.

At 4K for that and a parts car, you shouldn't be wasting your time asking, you should be on the road with a trailer to get it home.

HAMBer petritl had something really similar to this one, might have been a Dodge Wayfarer and not a Plymouth, but same era Mopar convertible in approximately the same condition, and he sold it a year ago for more than this guy is asking for his. Could PM him for details.

Maybe Wisconsin is different, but $4K seems like a very reasonable asking price for that, especially if the guy is negotiable.

You guys throwing out offers of $1K, that's scrap value of the two cars. You guys must live in a dream world if you're getting stuff like this for a grand.

  8. I agree...while I think 4k may be at the top of the value (or getting close), a thousand bucks don't get hardly nothing let alone a clean original convertible.

Man, you find the shit. I like it. I've been digging early Mopars lately.
Realistically would have the time to put into it? What about the delivery your working on? How far would 3-4 K get you on it?
    cheers, G

I like '49 Plymouths. They are a bit tall, more like a modern SUV. They were sturdy low priced family cars. It doesn't have to be completely restored to be fun. The stodgy label was given to these cars but they were a big seller nonetheless. The convertible is uncommon.

Err, this is not really a restoration website...

Ressurecting this thread, well I have a chance to get 3 of the in the usual rusted out floor and rocker condition plus two sedans for the parts such as floors, with titles, total package around $7000, anyway I think these are really cool looking, when all done up, like the one in the photo.

I can't say about true value in your area, but here in CT, that is far too much money for rusty ones.

an estate I worked at had a decent 47 coupe that would run, hardly any serious rot, and they tried starting a 4500, but after a year, took 1500

they also had a 47 and a 48, both convertibles, both had lower rot. Not running, motors may have been stuck. They tried for 2500 each, then were finally sold for 2000 to 2500 for both including a pile of NOS goodies that were not supposed to be given away with the cars, unless it was a lot more money.

I thought those convs were pretty cool looking, but when I priced them online, even a decent older restoration (or fixed up) that never had bad rust, were fairly low priced in my mind

I paid $7k for a 50 desoto vert about 4 years ago. Minimal rust but in need of a full restore including motor and 18k for older restored 41 Plymouth vert last fall. Pic attached.

If you really want one I don't think $2k is a terrible entry point for a convertible , based on condition $1500 would be better. Apples to oranges but my 41 was appraised by a professional appraiser for an estate at $25k. My point is there is some value to these cars even though they are not highly collectable.

I have been in the market for a while now searching about every Craigslist in the country plus Ebay for a 39-50 project vert. under $3000 and let me say pickings are non-existent or slim at best, not sure what the criticism could be ona 50 Plymouth vert. but that photo I posted of the restored on in my opinion is beautiful.

I am still on the lookout for my dream car which can be affordable a 40 ford or Mercury convertible. Top goes down the money goes up.

Another data point. I was eyeballing a 4 door 50 desoto for parts that was in CL. No rust survivor, but engine had been partially disassembled. Seller was asking $2500 and it sold pretty fast before I could check it out.

Not sure you saw it but there is also a 49 dodge vert here in the hamb classifieds. It's outside of your $3k budget though.
