Continuing the build thread of my 1950 Buick 4dr Special here. I originally posted it under traditional kustoms, but I guess it don't exactly meet the guidelines over there. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...om-in-less-than-1-year.1302671/#post-15009552 So when we left off I had the car sitting on 4x4s at the desired ride height, trying to locate the rear end in the frame. Basically that rear fender is just hanging there on the car, so I could center the wheel in the wheel opening. Once I got it close on both sides I took the rear fender off and started measuring from the frame to the axle. It took me a couple tries, but I was able to locate the rear end. Once pinion angle was set I welded it to the frame with some 1/4 in flat bar in exactly desired ride height position. I went with a triangulated 4 link setup from Gambino's Kustoms. I'm lucky that their shop is very local to me. It has been a real learning experience trying to figure out how to do a custom suspension. For me it all starts "by eye" and if it looks right, then I start taking measurements afterwards. Lot of reading on forums and watching videos on how to.
Following. I love these cars, and am happy to see someone working on a more-door. I hope you do end up daily driving it, and can just have fun with it instead of getting caught up in a whirlwind of perfectionism that keeps you from getting it "done." I've got plenty of clapped out projects as well, and I personally find it more fun than having one perfect, shiny car.
Just transferred to this thread site... Gambino offers a nice rear suspension set up... That should eliminate the jelly roll ride of bags. Is there a panhard bar as well?
It looks great at that ride height. Is there enough clearance around the rear tire to remove it in case it goes flat? Maybe with the air suspension you can raise the suspension easily, though.
I had a 50 super with 4 link little lower than that and it was a nightmare to change the rear tires. Had to pull the shocks to drop enough to get tire out. Just an idea to watch for.
