Hi - please excuse the "elementary-ness" of these questions but any help would be appreciated: What size motor in a 1950 Cadillac fleetwood (commercial chassis)? A 331? Did all Cadillacs in this year come with power steering? If not is it possible to put in power steering? Electric windows - where is the controller/vaccum for the electric windows? Is there a fuse bank/box? If so where is it? Any and all help greatly appreciated - I'm order a repair manual as we speak. Thanks Bekka
The hydraulic windows are controlled by a huge pump and reservoir that is mounted down in the passenger front fender. I've seen them up on the firewall as well. We've got a '50 Coupe deVille. Those windows are a bitch. Good luck.
btt -- I gotta have the power steering answer or I cannot keep the car. I cannot physically drive the car without power steering (are you kidding me???) --- definitely NOT wonderwoman here! Thanks in advance
What size motor in a 1950 Cadillac fleetwood (commercial chassis)? A 331? 331, 160hp Did all Cadillacs in this year come with power steering? I don't show power steering as an option till 1953. If not is it possible to put in power steering? Anything is possible...but since you will more than likely have to replace the steering box to adapt to PS, and the steering box is probably worn, I would consider changing out to a Rack and Pinion steering column. Electric windows - where is the controller/vaccum for the electric windows? Already answered...Hydraulic. Messy Messy Is there a fuse bank/box? If so where is it? Yes, Under the dash behind the radio on the firewall (At least on my 1953) got any pics???
If anyone knows of a good mechanic that can install power steering and repair the windows in this car please let me know - thanks!
Well I suppose I should specify location - I'm in Lancaster, CA - need someone who can put power steering in this car and repair the electric windows. Anybody? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler? Thanks in advance
If you are looking for somebody that has Classic Cadillac experience that can be recommended, then you may want to ask that question here: http://www.cadillaclasalleclub.org/forum/index.php Nice car!
What a beaut!!! Just saw several Cads very similar to this over the weekend while watching the movie My Favorite Year for probably the 20th time. At least.
Thanks! Yes I'm really liking him a lot - some paint issues and trim issues (expected) but otherwise he's straight and runs really well. Interior issues also but that, again, is expected in a car this old. Nothing that I'm not willing to handle for sure. The windows (electric/hydraulic) appear to be a huge issue but I'm up for it or at least finding someone who is up for it! I'm learning very quickly about the quirks and perks of a car this old. Thanks for the recommendation - I will hopefully get someone that knows what they're doing and does good quality work. The more doors the better in my opinion and this car is the next best thing to what I was ultimately searching for (a hearse). Thanks again and I'll post progress pix
As of 10/29/08...don't know if it's still available... http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/898905796.html R-
You have 1950 Cadillac questions? Wow. You are the most courious person I've ever seen about Cadillacs. The HAMB is definately the place to get all those questions answered. But I counted only 7. Just 1943 more Cadillac questions to go! Come on, guys, we can do this!
Thanks but that's a combination - I was looking for just a plain ol' hearse (no windows in the back side 1/4's). Hate to be picky but it's what I really and truly want. That's probably why I haven't found one yet. LOL
OK. Fine. How 'bout a '54 Caddy hearse (yes, I'm quite sure this one is a hearse) then, I may know where one is...but I don't know if it's 'really' for sale...he says it is, but money talks and BS walks, ya know...??? Let me get a phone number or an e-mail address for you... R-
I love the HAMB and the users - everyone is chalk full of info so I figured this is the best place to start - I have gotten more answers here than on any of the Cadillac specific boards. Caddys are some of the most beautiful cars ever built in my opinion - present company's vehicle notwithstanding of course
MizPhester, If you find anyone who does a good job with the windows, let me know. I have some issues with my 52 Caddy windows. I also have power steering in my 62 series. I am not sure though if it was stock or not. Good luck
I will let you know if the guy I'm taking it to tomorrow is a goodie or baddie with regard to the windows. heh I have a feeling that these windows are going to be the death of me.
I remember at one point in time that there was a company that was making a retrofit kit to make the hydraulic windows electric. If I remember correctly it was like $1K for a four door kit. It used the original switches. I tried searching for it last night and could not find it. I will continue to search and let you know if I find anything. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
cadillac didnt have power steering until 1952. the steering box will need to be changed to convert to power steering. then use 52 pump and engine mounts. i have a column all off ready to ship for p.s. ..the windows - check apple hydraulics in hemmings motor news magazibe. or convert your car to modern hot rod power windows and remove all the hydraulic lines & pump. have you driven the car ? it is nothard to steer unless you use a smaller steering wheel or lower tires,,it's a cadillac bot a ford. as long as it is moving it steers easy, don't try to park it and stand still and turn, keep it rolling it turns easy. keep in mind some parts items are different on fleetwood and C.C. good luck CADILLAC DAVE
Ya I have driven it. It is a BIOTCH when it's not moving for sure - not that bad when you're moving but the problem is even turning corners it's difficult and very scarry. I could probably get used to it truthfully. So it is possible to take all that hydraulic KAKA out of there for the windows and rig up motors? I would assume that the assembly itself is the same just the controller would change is that correct?
My 1953 came with Hydro windows with new, but somewhere in the early sixties, they got converted to manual roll-up windows... Just a thought
My great grandma bought her 49 Series 61 Caddy Sedan and drove it the rest of her life until she decided she didn't need to drive anymore, somewhere in her 90's. She was a little lady, but I'm guessing kinda scrappy, at least that's what I hear about her. I don't remember her too much but I do recall going tp the grocery with her in the '49. She gave it to my dad and he kept it in his basement for a decade or so and then gave it to me. Long story short, I bet you can get used to the manual steering, but if you really want the PS, then you should make the car the way you want it.
Found a site with some info on Cadillac commercial and professional cars and I think I found the hearse you're looking for. Only it's not really for sale, that I know of. Click on the link and scroll down just a bit to see the 1947 Cadillac Superior Cathedral Hearse. Cadillac Commercial & Professional Cars But now on to some more serious business. I'm guessing that your '50 Cad has 6 volt electrics. It's been suggested that you might upgrade your hydraulic power windows with motor driven regulators that are readily available for street rods and the like. But I suspect that most if not all of these kits have 12 volt motors. Now if you're thinking of switching the car over to a 12 volt system then it's not a problem, but that might be quite a job in itself. And besides, if you can get them working, how cool will it be to tell people that you've got "juice" windows!
