I had to grinded down the nose of the starter to make it fit the 216 bellhousing ,but its on now Going to get the manifolds on this week and it should be ready to go in.
Had to order the intake rings and intake gaskets ,but its all on Going to install the fuel pump, dist and the breather tube this Sunday. It should be ready to go in. Any advice where to attach the chain for the engine hoist?
Oh one more thing , i will be heading out to the lonestar roundup in Austin hope to see some of you out there. Wont be there with my car but next year is my goal
to lift those engines I made a plate that bolts to the two holes where the coil would mount. the bracket extends up and has a hole for a chain to hook/bolt to. the other end of the chain either wraps around the manifold or if the manifold is removed bolts to an intake bolt. this will lift the engine nice and even.
I got axle straps and put one where the starter mounts and the other i will wrap around the manifold, Thank you for that idea
watch the balance...lifting an engine below it's center of gravity can result in it flipping over.... I've attached a chain to the rear intake bolt and the opposite side thermostat housing bolt on the head, iirc or remove the rocker assembly and use two of those bolt holes
More advice needed, I tried installing the engine but cant get it to mate with the tranny, My question is should i remove the tranny and install it with the engine? I dont know much about the torque tube..
Trans in neutral so input can rotate freely? It looks like you are hung up.on the splines going into clutch disc. If my memory is right, 10 splines, so you need to get lined up.
Yeah you can install transmission with the engine without pulling the torque tube. Once you unbolt the tail housing it becomes pretty self explanatory. Just make sure to support torque tube with a jack or jack stand before disconnecting
A couple long bolts with the heads cut off and screwed into the bell housing go a long way to getting the trans lined up.
Thanks guys, i hope this weekend i will give it another shot will use all the recomedations and see which one works .
I failed. I tried and still could not get the tranny and engine to bolt up. I was afraid to either strip the treads on the bellhousing or break the ears off the tranny
Doesn't that transmission need to be rotated 90* counter clock wise? Something isn't right there. Sorry for the misdiagnosis, I haven't seen a torque tube transmission in a while.
I took the tranny out, was not that hard, and i did put a jack stand under the torque tube. Since its out I am going to clean it paint it and change the fluid Hope to get them bolted up together this weekend.
Pilot studs are used to guide the trans into place; if the clutch disc isn't lined up or some other problem is present; using all thread to force the trans isn't going to do anything but cause more grief. Does the throw out bearing fit the trans collar and slide on smoothly? Was the disc aligned with a pilot tool or trans shaft while the pressure plate was tightened down? Is the disc correct; bore size and number of splines? I hate seeing people having this kind of grief on something that should go easy and wish I could be around to help.
You are right, I think something is not lining up. Now that the tranny is out I will get a chance to see whats going on. I dont have the orginal disk to compare it to, I really got this car in boxes and tubbs. I did match the pitot/ clutch alignment tool that was in the kit to the input shaft on tranny. I got bummed , after a good night rest, life is still good! I hope to work on again tonight after work.
whenever I get a new clutch kit. I always slide the throw out bearing, clutch disc and pilot bushing on the tranny before putting them in place. a SMALL dab of grease on the splines pilot bushing hole and the collar the throw out bearing rides on.
I think it must have been the angle ? Took me no more than 2 minutes to bolt them together. I used another jack to help me balance it out. Now that I know its works I took them apart again. I cleaned up the trans and painted it. Tommorow I will give it a second coat and clean out all the mounting threads with a die.
Make your pilot studs out of long bolts with the heads cut off; the smooth shank and lack of threads will make the trans slide easier.
I cleaned up the input shaft, it was full of gunk. I wonder if that was a problem why it gave me issue?
