Im hoping someone can help me. I want to replace the original starter on my 1950 chevy deluxe with a newer starter. Does anyone know what starter will fit/work. 3.6 engine and ive converted the electrical to 12 volt.
Any help would be huge thanks

The 6v starter will mesh properly with the 54-older flywheels, and the 12v starter will mesh with the 55-up flywheels. They completely redesigned the starter and flywheel when they switched to 12v in 1955. It is not as simple as you hoped. You can only use the 12v starter from a 235 from 55-62 if you change to a 55-up flywheel.

Could you not just change the solenoid to a 12v?What about just running the starter on 12 volts.I have seen this done on high compression VW motors. They use the old 6v startes instead of buying a high dollar starter.

My 6 volt starter with a 12v solenoid works every time.

  8. The newest starter you're going to find is a '62 anyways.

A 6V will go a long time on 12V, I've even moved the whole car on the starter from the battery when I had to get it in the garage in a pinch and the (expletive) fuel filter or pump or something clogged up again.

If it's shot, you can buy a new/rebuilt one (expensive), have the old one rebuilt at a shop, or try and score a good used one - which is probably your best bet as I've had spare 6V starters for Chevys and could never give the damn things away. There might be one yet now out in the garage here handy. Bug me and I'll take a look.

Swapped my 235 to 12V back in 1990. Starter still 6V and still going strong,

Just dont hang on the starter too much - say 3-5 secs at a time and you should be sweet.

You could buy a 12V solenoid, but that leaves less $ for other worthwhile pursuits like wayward women...

Hope you left the 6V horns in place.
