I have been into vintage motorcycles for several years now and have wanted a Panel truck to do my hauling with . So last winter I bought one out west (Saskatoon) . In the process of trying to get it ready for spring of this year I find that the starter is messed up and cannot be rebuilt . Armature is twisted . My question here , can anyone tell me if a more modern 12 volt starter off of any other six cylinder Chevs will bolt right up ? Thanks John
Welcome John. Nice choice of a bike hauler. I'm sure finding a replacement starter for that Chevy shouldn't be difficult. By the way any starter can be rebuilt if enough time and money is spent.
Chevy of the 40s up in ur neck of the woods. Brothers....bowtie bits...all can sell u a new or reconditioned starter. Are u switching to 12volt or staying with 6? Pixs of your project for guys like me who cant read are appreciated
I will get some pictures together and try to figure out how to put them on the site . My real question is Will a more modern (as in sixties) and easily available off the shelf at a typical parts store , six cylinder , standard ****** , 12v starter fit directly on to my 1950 Chev truck ? The jobbers cannot supply a new 6v original starter or any of the parts thereof . My starter has a twisted armature and cannot be fixed . I am hoping there is someone out there that knows about interchangability . Thanks John
Welcome from the Windy City! You should be able to find what you are looking for here; https://www.fillingstation.com/
Had a bit of luck yesterday . On my way to the local Starter guru I dropped into a older metal recycler (or that`s what they called s**** yards now) and asked if there were any about . There was a old GMC firetruck there and buddy said to have a look . Sure enough the starter was still on it , so I pulled it off and buddy motored it in the shop . $50.00 bucks , great . So off my Granddaughter and I went to the starter guy . $170.00 to rebuild the old one , so I left it with him to find the parts , if he can . So now I will have a spare . Starter Bob asked if I wanted it changed to 12v . After listening to the pro and cons on the 6 and 12 volt subject it was suggested that I stick with the 6v system and buy a 8v battery . That way the turning cranks are a bit up , I do not have to change the light bulbs , dash instruments , gas tank sending unit , etc. etc. and the truck sticks closer to originallity . Who knows everything may change later once the old girl is on the road and being used . I want her to be a daily driver , except during the winter of course as we put lots of salt on our roads here . On the way home I dropped back to the junk yard and asked if I could see if the generator was there . It was and I bought it for $40.00 . Great deal and I will get it gone over and keep for a spare as well . The rad is still in the firetruck too . Measured it up to see if it will fit the Panel . Hope it will as it is the old honeycomb type and in excellent condition . Pretty lucky to find a donor truck so close to home , just twenty minutes up the highway . Firetrucks do not see a terrible lot of use and they are usually well kept up so I will be back there picking . John
