Lookin' good. Is that upper gauge hole for a clock? Tach? I also use two grinders; 3 different stones and a wire wheel. Nearly identical to yours. Never have to be changing wheels around that way.
It's for a wind up clock but I would like to find a tach that would fit that hole! I need to get that other bench grinder mounted. It is just sitting there. Someone gave it to me. One of the many unfinished projects I have sitting around!
I actually found a place that sells a tach that I think will work. Looks like it might require a bit of modification though. I think a tach will look great in that spot. I borrowed this photo from another forum, I do not own this image or it's contents. www.speedhut.com
Ive got some spare tachs I can check for size.. That cover is just fragile pot metal, we rolled one out of sheet metal and welded it up smooth. No help now that your already painted though.. Progress looks great, let me know if you decide to get rid of the clock.
The clock doesn't work but let me see how the tach I ordered works out and I'm sure we can strike a deal!
Looking great Robin! Nice job! You got a month to Lead Ain't Dead....I bet you stand a better chance of getting your car there than I do....and all I have to do is fix my broken oil gauge line and replace the exhaust collector bolts. We'll see if I get it done. LOL
I'm working on getting it there. It certainly won't be finished. Do you know if an unfinished car can be entered? I don't think I've ever seen an unfinished car in a show! Hahaha!
Of course it can be entered. You must not be paying too close attention at Mickey's shows....I think most of the cars are unfinished....especially his. LOL
Well I am thrashing on it, but am going to be forced to cover up a bunch of stuff that is unfinished with aesthetic cover i fear. But I am pretty excited about it! Ive been saying for several years I was going to bring it, and it looks like it is going to happen. I know some of it is rookie stuff but hey! I am a rookie!
I have to be honest in that I haven't been following along full time latley. Maybe you have already covered this as to the why or how. In this photo I see what looks like exhaust hangers that are mounted sideways. Is this some new Trick system or is there more to it I just don't, see? Exhaust that I'm used to seldom needs lateral control, it's generally about support the weight from giving into Gravity. The warehouse calls them "Exhaust Hangers" for a reason. Also, I see the cables for the E-Brake coming out the backing plate facing the rear and a loop taking it back forward. I already know how that works out when you pull the handle, and the inner wants to get into a strait forward pull. You got something going on there I don't understand? The way I cured my issue was to make a very stable guide to anchor the outer jacket so it actually worked. Curious minds just want to know.
That picture was taken before I made the guy redo the exhaust. He had it all jacked up. I was really disappointed in the job he did originally. To be honest, I am not sure if that "hanger" is still there or not. If it is, it will be removed and proper "hangers" will be installed when I can get to it. On the few shakedown runs we have made with the car, the exhaust just sounded badass, and didn't fall out in the road. There are other hangers supporting the exhaust. As far as the parking brake goes, I haven't gotten that totally sorted out. It is a work in progress. I'm sure once I get some of the hundreds of other things done, I am sure I will get the outer jacket secured to stabilize the cable. Thanks for the heads up!
Glad you're making progress. As for E-Brake it looks to me maybe the backing plates (or at least 1) is on the wrong side. If so, maybe just swapping them will help you out in the long run. You can of course keep working with what you have. Here is one way to resolve the cable draw you have going on. This is the system in my 32 and I specifically wanted to use the handle you see and have it mounted as is. To do this the left cable needed to cross over to the right and both be a "direct pull". This is nothing new as for the design and how it works, just adapted to do the job I needed. Ultimately you need both cables to draw the shoes tight at the same time. If the cable jacket can draw at all that won't happen, and you only have one side doing its job. The photo above looks simple in itself. To get there I used a piece of heavy wall hydraulic tubing and crossed the left over to the right through it. Ford actually made a version of this in the 60's and I just pirated it and made it work for me. I've done several versions over the years. Hope this helps a little. Keep making progress pal.
Thanks Mike! Really great explanation of things. Here is a photo of the cable system I used. It's kinda hard to see, and I just had it clamped on at the time. It looks almost like the one you are using. As far as the cable coming out of the rear of the backing plate, that is how that rear end came. It is out of an S10 and I don't think I can turn it around facing forward if I remember right. That photo was taken in February of 2017. I will try to snap one next time I crawl under the car. I like the bracket you made to hold the cables. I am sure I can make something similar, but it just hasn't been a priority.
Trevor and @Lone Star Mopar came over today and helped get my new radiator installed, and then we put in the windshield and stainless trim. Took awhile to get the gasket manipulated over the center bar of the windshield but when we did, the stainless trim layed down and everything sort of (it was a bitch!) went into place. Windshield looks good! Starting to work on the door glass and vent windows next. Thanks for the help guys!
It's pretty damn ugly right now, but let's see what we can do about that in the next coming weeks......at least it is able to be driven!
Wait a damn minute!! We can't have ugly cars?? When the hell did that start let's use the word functional, because there's a lot of pretty cars around that aren't functional lol. And I'll take function over gloss any damn day of the week. Looking awesome Robin, you've done so damn much since I started here in 2019
Let's load up some of those 19 HP mini-bikes and go to the races! Just let me know when! I love me some road trippin'!
I have been stalled out several times and overwhelmed more than several times but it is starting to pay off. The little 5 or 6 mile trip we took on Sunday was the christening run of the old car. No bottle of champagne to break over the hood, because I spent too much on parts and couldn't afford the champagne! Oh yeah, the hood isn't on it yet either., there is THAT! The photo that Trevor posted was just a test fit of the hood to see if the new radiator had clearance after we "adjusted" the brace on the bottom side of the hood.
Hoods are optional. Get it running, put a windshield in it, and hit the highway sounds like you're there to me lol. Glad to see you got the glass in!
The windshield is in but it wasn't without running into a couple of issues. Its all been sorted out though! Thanks for the pep talk and advice last weekend, it contributed to the ultimate success of the installation! I am waiting on the door regulators to get finished soaking on the citric acid bath, and then the window glass goes in. I already have the vent windows rebuilt with new gaskets and glass. They turned out nice!
Thanks Dave.....so many little things to do now. They are getting done a lot faster than the REALLY BIG ones like cutting 3 different cars apart and welding pieces and parts of the three together to make one! I look back on when I started this project and think "how did you get yourself into this mess?!?!" Its all coming together now though!
