Some folks don't care about the driving; for them it's all about the build. Me; I couldn't care less about the building of them. I get my kicks out of driving the wheels off of them. It looks like you've enjoyed the build, but I really hope you get a huge charge out of driving this thing around the world a couple of times. And I'll be looking for it at next year's Stray Kat 500.
Good to see you kicking goals with this thing! Looking forward to seeing where the next few weeks take you.
While on the subject of hoods, I started working on the hood. An hour of needle scaling got all the old undercoating off underneath the hood. I need to treat the underneath for rust before tackling the top side. I'll drape some shop towels soaked in phosphoric acid on the bad spots and keep them wet for a few days. If you look at the brace at the front of the hood you can see where Trevor worked his magic with the cutting wheel. Maybe he will post a picture of his favorite size of cutting wheel!
Not trying to bust your bubble, Trevor. That would get you fired off any job I've ever been on. Please don't do that.
We were goofing around. I had to change the chop saw blade and he put it on there as a joke. I said "Do NOT turn that switch!"
Worked on some small stuff this evening. Rebuilt the window regulators as far as de-rusting them in the citric acid barrel and then replaced all the rollers on them. I had to make a little punch to spread the new rivets out. I save all kinds of stuff like small punch like pieces of rod or whatever, specifically for things like this. Here are a few photos of tonight's shenanigans!
Here are the new rivets spread out with the tool I made. Both regulators need to be lubed with a bit of lithium grease and installed in the doors. I am having to rebuild the glass tracks as they are badly rusted.
Looks like one of the glass tracks has been repaired in the past. The little bracket was braised on the track. I'll clean all the brass off and TIG the brackets back on the new glass track.
Small update....after getting the passenger door fitting relatively well I discovered that the vent window that came from a different door had an issue with the mounting screws not lining up. @Lone Star Mopar hooked me up with a new passenger door, and I checked the vent window fitment, and all was good so I replaced the door with the one that Lone Star Mopar gave me. I got all the glass in the door after mounting the door. To preface this post, last weekend Trevor came over and we took the carbs off the car, as it was running crappy, like it didn't want to accelerate. We disassembled them and blew them out, used some choke and carb cleaner in the passages, re-assembled them and went for a drive. She was running like a hopped up sewing machine after we did all that. So.....with the new door on the car, I am about to go out on a little cruise, as I am going to start making longer and longer runs with the car to build some confidence in my work. The plan is to take it to the LSRU in April, and I think I am finally going to make the Stray Kat 500 after many years of saying.."Next Year!"
I think that it probably is time to change the title from "1950 chopped sedan delivery" to something else or get out the saw.
Thanks Jeff....it's an ugly duckling at the moment but she is cruising down the highway at 70 mph no problem! Gotta keep shakin' 'er down as I start doing some necessary things like rear floorboards and back doors. That thing is pretty damn loud!
I'll be lookin' for ya. If you see me (in Clarence) first come say hi. Note: the avatar pic is old but nostalgic. I'm keepin' it in place. Clarence is dark blue now.
That needs to happen sooner than later! I'm ready when you are....let's get this thing looking right!
I'm going to need to start gathering up some stainless pieces to get this thing shining up a little. Anyone have any bright work for 49 through 52 Chevy two doors laying around?
Hey Robin, I think my parts coupe may have some of the stainless in the trunk. I'll take a looks after work. I know its got a pretty decent grill.
Robin, I have an entire 51 front suspension assembly with dropped lowers, Windstar springs, and all the other tricks needed to get low. It has been sitting next to my shop for 5 years or so, but came out of my very solid driving car. If you want to come get it, I'll donate it to the cause!
Holy shit brother! I cannot refuse that deal! Send me a PM with your phone number and I will give you a call to figure out when I can make it up there. I think you are in Missouri but I don't remember for sure. I'm always up for a road trip! Thanks a million!
