Projects 1950 Chrysler Windsor build, AGAIN !

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by rubberrodder, Jan 25, 2026.

  1. Hello everybody!
I'm starting in on my 1950 Chrysler again. This is the car pictured in my avatar. Just a bit of history on this old girl. My dad brought this car home in February of 1968. I was 9 years old and immediately laid claim to it as"MY CAR". Something about all that chrome and voluptuous curves. Dad taught my how engines worked on this car as we rebuilt the original flathead six. That was 1973, and it was still chugging along until a few weeks ago. I noticed over the summer some bubbles and seepage between the block and cyl. head. Just enough to be a warning of things to come. The old buggy needs some front end work as well and I ac***ulated the king pins and bushings as well as new master cylinder and new wheel cylinders. All six of them! Now the "fun" begins.

20251030_175154.jpg After not budging since 1973, I knew this was inevitable. 18 out of 21 came out with no h***le.
20251109_161203.jpg Here's the after shot. If you look close you can see the 3 "uncooperative" bolts that broke.
    More stuff tomorrow.

Hopefully you can get those head bolts extracted without having to drill them. Sounds like you have a long history with this car, that's neat. I like this era of Mopar, even though they seem to be pretty under-valued by the old car buying public.

Wow, that's some long term family ownership.
    Good luck on the extractions.

I tried that already. I got plenty of penetration into the nuts, but, my little 110 welder wouldn't get any into the bolt itself. I found the correct drill size and got busy. 20260106_174945.jpg Here's the nuts I tried to weld.
20260114_175304.jpg I started with a 3/16 drill bit and started working my way up from there. I ended up crooked and had to fall back to regroup.
20260125_141245.jpg I needed a drill guide fixture! The cylinder head bolt holes are just the right height and make a perfect drill jig. I did need a piece of tubing to shrink the hole a bit and prevent bit chatter.
20260125_141326.jpg The tube fits the bolt hole.
20260125_141341.jpg The drill bit fits the tube.
20260126_195220.jpg I put the head back on the block with a couple of bolts to keep it from shifting around. I was surprised at how well this actually worked. I have one more to drill out tomorrow night and then run the tap to clean up the threads. After that new head STUDS and a fresh gasket.

  7. Replaced with a new one when I did the water pump 2 years ago. I also run a bit "rich" on the coolant mix for corrosion protection.

  8. Woo Hoo ! I got the last broken bolt out of the block. Now, all I need is hit the threads with a tap to clean them up. I went on line to find new head bolts or studs. HOLY ****! The one place I actually found the factory style bolts wanted $220 bucks a set.
I also checked locally for studs. I did find them. 7/16-14 x 7/16-20 x 3 inch long. $110. dollars for a 10 pack. I need 21 fasteners. Nuts and washers sold separately. I decided since good old Speedway Motors sells flathead Ford stuff I would look there. Sure enough! Flat head Ford V8 head stud kits, '49-'53, $128 for the full set. 48 studs, 48 nuts, 48 washers. More than twice as many as I need for less than 1/2 the price. Yep. I am a cheap S.O.B. But that kind of money for "hardware" just frosts my hide.

Yeah, that sounds about right....sure miss the Billetproof shows.
We sold our place in Yelm, and moved out to the coast.
    Hope all is going well.

  11. I miss the Billetproof shows too. The first year, I went down Friday night and camped in the notorious "oak grove" {party central}camping area. I finally got to sleep about 3:00 a.m. when a guy in a blown hemi 27 T roadster decides to be an alarm clock at 6, with open headers! I came home sunburned to a crisp, totally exhausted, and slept for 14 hours straight. And I could hardly wait till the next year!:D
