It helps to remove them, depending on the style of chop on a Merc IMHO. Your proportions look great, and to me, they would just be clutter...awesome work!
Hey OlBeet I agree that a 49 or 50 window should never be moved forward at all. However Sam wasnt going for that long 1/4 window straight post look that requires the split. Now that his 1/4 window is dragged forward with the rest of the roof he feels that his c pillar would look too thick if he doesnt move the rear window forward.Having said that, even if I did a 1 peice drop like this with the shorter 1/4 windows I still wouldnt move the rear window forward at all.I see nothing wrong with a thick C pillar. It lends itself to the fat bulbous *** draggin look that the Barrises acheived 55 years ago.I know FlamedAbone moved his forward and I do think the car looks ***s.
beet, got pics? thats a great idea. sam, i think you've got it now. nail 'er down and your done. the roof looked good before, but, i think the extra effort to move it back will be worth the trouble when your done.
i dont know if you saw the other pics i posted the other night,, but i cut the window surround out and ,moved it back ,i hated it.i wanted to try and do something a lil different, but it lost that "merc" look,,so i cut it out . at the time ,i was trying to do what i thought would look good, but i wasnt happy with it. i have moved it back another inch from the pics i posted the other night. i dont claim to be an expert on mercs, chopping tops,or anything for that matter,,i am just a guy chopping his own car in my lil 2 car garage WITHOUT help from anybody else,. hey OOMACK,,how about some pics of all the mercs you have chopped in the past to give me insperation on how to do the perfect chop,. you HAVE chopped one before havent you?
i got the filler in above the roof, and made templetes for fillers on quarters. hopefully i will get a lil time in on it tommorow
^ sam, are you a bodyman ? Is that what you do ? You seem to turn these cars out pretty quick man, thats rad
nope,...well, i did work in a body shop for about 6 months a few years back...i couldnt make any money because i was to slow haha
thanks guys! ******,,my uncle said if he gets a chance he will give you a call monday, thanks malcom and unionville hahaa squigy....now i am having second thoughts of getting rid of
God damn that looks ***s.That window moved back really does it for me!Whos not an expert on chopping mercs?I chopped a box and thats it and know what the **** Im talking about when it comes to mercs ,trust me.Keep it how ya have it now!Merry Christmas.
Yer Merc looks great man.Now regarding the drip rails. It's safe to say that once you chop these cars having the drip rails at least to me doesn't matter anymore becuase you've radically altered the roof and even part of the body. You've in a sence tranformed the whole cars looks and with our without the drip rails a 49/50 Merc looks totally bad *** with a nice chop.
if the drip rails are shaved the crown of the roof looks too much for me, i would have to take an inch out of the crown to clost the m*** between the door gap and the top m***. im leaving mine on just for that matter. other than that it is all up to the owner/builder. do what you like, thats what itss all about. im really enjotin the merc threads latley!!!!! keep up the good work and post often!
i don't get the debate over the drip rails. most of the early cars didn't have them. none of the "great" mercs had them. i like them. so, i kept them. if your worried about "correctness" then they need to go. (this reads kinda smart ***, wasn't intended that way)
I happen to like a little "smart ***" once in a while!!!!!!! Keeps everyone on their toes!!!!!! No offence taken here! I happen to like the drip rails also, but with that being said I never seen a bad merc, Ive seen better ones, but never a bad one!!!! Some of the best ones had them and some didnt!!! As for the "smart ***" im running a bit low and could use a refresher!!!! ANYONE????? LOL ETHER
right on Ether,,its all up to the builder/builders taste.,,,i was just razzing a lil in my first post on this thread about the drip rails... i do like them, and had actually planned on keeping them at first, but decided to remove them...if everybody built there cars the same it would be pretty boring... Merry Christmas everybody!
I liked the window where it was, but I like it better now. It ****s to cut the whole back window out when it was damn near done, but I think it was worth it. Twice as nice, cause you did it twice. -Abone.
Those last pics look best Sam.....really looks nice.... What are the other plans? Taillights??? Fade-aways????
hahaa squigy....now i am having second thoughts of getting rid of [/QUOTE] I figured that would happen.... Looks great.good job
Excellent piont 50 Merc fan! None of the all time greats had rain gutters .I guess the Barrises and the Ayalas just saw them as visual ubstructions.**** Dean is the one who made em look god habitually.
thanks fellas! i'm wanting to first of all lower the rear of the car....make the skirts flush at the bottom like the barris merc, lower the rear bumper, maybe the taillights, if anything that i have learned about mercs is that over the past few months of all the mercs i have been studing,,is that no two are the same,,everyone is different,,there is always something different about them ,so many factors...chop heigth,b pillars, rear window placement, drip rails, quarter window shape,,everyone i have looked at has soemthing different....
^ What are you gonna do for the rear suspension, Bags . . . . . . . . . . . ...juice [ to keep everyone happy ] ?
i would like to have it airbagged eventually,.,,but for now i will probably just Cnotch and re-arch the rear springs. one side down, one to go!,,but the otherside will have to wait for a few days..
Nice Chop Sam. How many inches? I just joined this forum and I love what I see. I also just got a 1950 2-Door to chop. I am from New Mexico. Any ideas on how you came to such a great chop or was it trial and error? Go to www.cruise66.com to check out an awsome 1950 chopped. It is a beautiful ride. I hope to see yours when it is done I am sure she is going to look awsome. I had read a post of when you asked how to chop a merc. I have been trying to access a 22 page post on ruffrodders of a 50 chop but to no avail and they are not accepting registrations. I e-mailed the owner of the site and he replied that they are trying to raise $400 to get the site up. Hope it comes up soon. Beautiful Chop.
