I need to replace the manual steering box in my 50 Silver Streak and was wondering if there was a newer box that would be a bolt in replacement? Or, can anyone here offer any help on rebuilding my original box?
Think I would find out if theres a Pontiac club of America. If they have a news letter no doubt someone advertises parts/services for the tin indian.Long shot....could it use the same box as the 50 Chevy? If so parts for a rebuild would be easy to source. Likely there is also a early Pontiac forum out there on the net somewhere with indian fans who have figured it all out.
Im not sure on Pontiacs, but Chevys of that era have 2 different boxes. 1 was for powerglide cars and de other was for manual. Might be something similar for u. Maybe an upgrade of sorts to look into that?
I would guess steering boxes from Pontiacs through 1953 and possibly 1954 will work, someone who has a Hollander exchange manual may be able to look it up. California Pontiac Restoration lists a power steering conversion box for your car: https://www.pontiacparts.net/product/1939-57-power-steering-conversion-box-3-3-turns-lock-to-lock-9/ They may also have standard boxes and/or rebuild kits, they don't necessarily have all their stock listed on their website - give them a call. There is: Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI). https://www.poci.org
@fyrffytr1 The suggestions about Chevy boxes possibly being the same are incorrect for U S made Pontiacs, though may apply to Canadian built cars. Chevy and Pontiacs of that era use very different ch***is and front suspension. Your Pontiac will likely have a lot more in common with Oldsmobile Series 76 and 88 than other models. However, I think the other suggestions in other posts are likely to produce what you are looking for. Ray
I have about 3 inches of travel in either direction at the steering wheel before the pitman arm moves.
Here is an interesting read for a different upgrade https://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/t66951805/1950-pontiac-steering-column/?page=1
Canadian Pontiacs were Chevrolet based......totally different ch***is and suspension than U S manufactured Pontiacs.......
