Saw a single 97 with what looked to be the 49-53 oil bath style air cleaner but closer inspection showed that the element was a paper filter. Anyone done this and have a number of a filter that works. I believe the fello would have used the original top and wing nut but removed everything below the top?
I’ve removed the mesh then visited the parts store and kept fitting filters till one worked. For the top, I used and aftermarket air cleaner top (could make one) that sealed the paper element. Then added the original top.
Underneath the lid is a top that seals the paper element attached with a flat nut, then the top sits on that attached with a wing nut
So you cut and remove the bottom metal from the original top? This also removes the 2" centering pipe?
Post pics of the air cleaner you have. For mine, I removed the guts. Cut everything I didn’t need out. Then found an element that fit.

I did one for the 2 barrel on my 32. Similar to Anthony’s, just different donor. Adapted a complete modern assembly in to the trimmed out oil bath container. Was going to add screen to the inside of the openings but got lazy. Finished job Oil bath inner tub cut off and discarded Oil bath top after cutting off Oil bath base and outer shell New assembly New base neck cut off and opened up to fit down in oil bath base and outer shell New base opened up and sitting down in oil bath base K&N filter assembly number. 7” x 4”, 2-5/16” carb opening
I did that with my 39 Ford. It breathed so much easier I had to turn the idle down. Otherwise you couldn't tell the difference by looking at it.
