My 59 has the power steering that runs off the back of generator. Do you check fluid when car is hot or cold after setting for a while?? It also says type a trans fluid. Which would now be........?
I think warm on a level plain. It used the old type trans fluid. I'm in a senior moment right now and can't recall the type.
Type A was replaced by Dexron, which was upgraded with roman numerals like II etc. I think if you can find Dexron/Mercon fluid today, that would be good, or something specified for older cars (but not type F). What does the car owner's manual say?
Owners manual gone the way of DO-DO bird.Just on a real tight schedule right now. Figured One of the grey beards might know
I use a synthetic or synthetic blend PS fluid in all my older cars with power steering. Nothing wrong with using Dexron/Mercon fluid though. Check oil level warm, on a level surface as said above.
I have the owners manual for the 55 Chevy, it doesn't mention temperature, just says to fill it up to "full" on the dipstick. Since they did have cold/hot levels in later years, I'd suggest you check it warm.
