Perhaps I'm just crazy... but this is something I have noticed many times thru out this thread. Why is it the vast majority of hot rod comic books from the US seem to have 3 crashing cars on the cover? (and at least one HAS to be upside down in the air?). Yet the "down under" covers posted above only have two cars! Are there ultra-double-secret rules for crashing vehicles on comic book covers? Hidden nationalistic rituals? Inquiring minds want to know. Later, Gary.

the down under version are adaptations/cover swipes or reissues of the US editions of Young Men,Speed Demons, & Hot Rod and Speedway comics. Originaly published by Hillman,Charlton, & Atlas . The interior contents may be different. Hopefully some copies may still exist. Interesting question on the 2 vs 3 vehicles. I think if there are 2 vehicles a wheel must have come off, the driver ejected, or the car upside down ( or down under ? ) +Connie Rodd

Am up to 1947 in the Gasoline Alley strips. Skeezix is back from WW2, married Nina, had a son, & has decided up build a real Gasoline Alley Garage. His father Wally and Wally's buddies Bill (mechanic) Doc & Avery (cheapskate ) only worked in their back yards and home garages back in the 1920s. Corky, Skeezix's brother gets a job at the filling station only to be replaced on the pumps by Isabel a cute young lady and Skeezix's partner Bobble takes on a line of snake oil and useless car doodads.

After the war Skeezix takes delivery of a new car. The old Alleys guys like to hang out in the new garage in the way of Sarge & Hack the real mechanics. Corky gets to work on cars. After the war used prewar cars brought more than they did new.

  9. rbantique- It's obvious that scanning these Gasoline Alley strips has been a labor of love for you. Thanks for taking the time to make them big enough to be readable onscreen. And for posting them too! :D "Gypsy Abrasive Motor Oil. Grinds your valves while you drive!"

You are welcome .. I am in the 50s now The garage action is on the back burner strip wise as Corky Skeezix's brother has bought a diner and the strip is focused on the happenings there & and his sister Jane going off to college...so this might be it.. glad you enjoyed it.

  17. rbantique,
I'm amazed at the whole series of Alley Oop stock cars strips. Great stuff.

Hopefully no one has posted this before. Can't remember where I got it. There's another one (maybe more) featuring a midget driver (Joe Garson? Bob Swanson?).

    And remember kids, don't smoke!

Most likely Ruben Duran does not need an introduction . For a 1st or 2nd look check out his art
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=2609 . or google his website for more eye candy for your den or office wall.

  27. Thanks for the Alley Oop strip when he time travelled (a time travelling cave man!) to 1909.

And for the Gasoline Alley strips. I knew I'd done good when I bought a couple of those reprint books last year.

And what else? Oh yeah, the PS/Connie Rodd stuff. Will Eisner is a comic book legend.

I tend to stumble across things, you've obviously done the work in searching stuff out.

Here's a link to some downloads of car stuff.

And a digital newspaper cartoon from Salt Lake City.
    cheers,
    Brian
