There were some "customs" that had nothing done to the drive train except maybe dual exhaust. Those became low riders. But you are right about rods and customs. There was no period correct either. No one woke up on January 1. 1950 and said you can't build that '40s crap anymore. The "Code" is really just guidelines except here. Here you can get your keyboard kicked for errant posts.
Here are a couple of cars that a relative made bake in the early 50's in Newton Falls Ohio. We have no information other than the pics. His name was Jack Potter.
Wow, I am liking that black and red one. They cut the fenders a lot, but I like it. Anybody know what motor is in the non-fendered one? a hemi I think? My eyes torment me
These are a couple that are inspiring me. My "on deck" '28 rpu is going to take a lot of styling cues from these two. Gardner Despain's (the black car) from the Jan '59 R&C, and Harold Rost's (it's red) from the Dec '58 R&C. Rost's was also in Hot Rod later on. I'll try and scan that and post it if anyone's interested, along with the color cover shot and the rest of the feature from R&C.
Definitely at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in like 1955??? E.L. Cord owned that Beautiful Work of Art of a building till his death. Hank's Sports Job looks Fabulous by those Art Deco Columns. I remember the day it (Pan Pacific) was torched, What a loss...... I hope that at least the Sports Job lives on.

Beaner : When I said that ,I was thinking along the lines of Ray Fharners "Eclipse"or maybe Stuckey's '32 tudor in it's 1st form...I don't "do" Goodguys
No one with their shit about 'em does good guys. I figured you were thinking something a little before that. When I was little the show at the Cow Palace had an area for Custom Rods and for Show Rods. To this day I can't tell the difference. That said whenever I hear someone say Custom Rod I think Good Guys.
I always figgered , it was something like a custom rod could still haul ass ; and a show rod was more of a nogo showboat.
If you are using those two for inspiration, it should be a knockout. I REALLY like the black one with the cycle fenders!
Yeah, of course I've built this thing in my head in a multitude of styles. I had it filtered to cycle fendered, with a slight channel, when the Despain car appeared in a car show pic on the vintage shots thread. Somebody ID'd it, and mentioned the R&C feature. I lacked said mag in my collection at the time, but as soon as I rectified that, and saw the feature, I was set on the general look.
I remember we were discussing cycle fenders before. It looks like the engine is set back and the body is in the stock position on the frame. I actually really like the proportions. Those headlights look like 6" King Bee 98-99's. I recently bought two of them to use on my t-bucket.
I also really like the proportions, yep, it looks like the engine is set back to me too. The only thing that really throws me about it, is that the steering box mount looks goofy (it's hard to see for sure in the feature pics, and probably even harder to see here), but with the heavy channel, it may have been the only solution.
Fred Steel's 32 when it was on display at the Saratoga Auto Museum A link for more info on the car- http://www.kustomrama.com/index.php?title=Fred_Steele's_1932_Ford
And there you have it....a spring ahead with hairpins! I thought I had the only one left ...and mine is also a Massachusetts build .
i wonder how they did that front "toe" area of the carpet. was it white at one time? is it dyed? or did they sew another piece of carpeting? the dash is gray.
