Yep. The E-Brake is on the transmission on these cars, which makes a different rear end (with provision for emergency brakes) almost mandatory.

The e-brake is very essential to sort out on those cars. Parts are available, I used an old Motors Manual to do one around 1975.

This was after it had caught fire on a friend's 1951 Dodge.

The E brake drum on the end of the transmission was the park position. The transmission was basically put in neutral, and the "park" lever on the push ****on console slid to lock. Then the e brake on the transmission was applied to the restrict movement of the driveshaft for parking.

The '51 transmissions were not push ****on. The Powerflyte did not come out for a few years yet.

Push ****on transmissions did not happen till 1956, and ones with parking brake lever came in 62 or 63.

  8. All that has been said above check all the basics , while only smoking a bit at idle then clearing up is fine , an engine with a road draft tube will always smoke a bit when not moving .

a Hemi is a glorious engine , with the fluid drive trans makes for a fun driver , I had a 53 Windsor years ago and hands down in stock form drive absolutely fantastic , easily kept up with traffic , the drum brakes ( if adjusted correctly) stoped the car perfectly fine and the power steering worked great .

a Hemi engine would not be cheap to rebuild , but in saying that all the externals , carb , tune up parts , gaskets seals etc are not to costly .
An engine swap would involve a ton more then just “ the engine “ essentially a complete driveline swap with all the incidentals of mounts , brakets , cooling system , parking brake , wiring , hoses , trans , possible diff etc etc etc .

when Chevy introduced the small block they made engine swaps easy , all the other car brands out their , not so much . Plus ….. pretty much nothing is cooler than a Hemi !!

can’t believe no one’s said it yet , POST SOME PICS OF THIS GLORIOUS LAD YACHT!!:D:cool:
