Thanks! When I talked to Phil and said he saw the pictures of my merc the way I found it, he was disapointed the original rear bumper was gone with the bumper guard taillights.I told him how you reproduced them for me and I put them back on the car.

Yeah!I changed my pampers.I never dreamed it was a Von Dutch & Dean Jeffries survivor.I can't wait to see apcture of the glove box door too!

  3. This is great on so many levels. First, finding out just what a piece of history you have, then being able to contact the original owner (who is still around to provide all the background tidbits) and finally - letting us all in on the story via the H.A.M.B.. I love this place!

I'm so glad this Merc is still around and you are allowing us to observe it's past, present, and perhaps future.

    Thanks!
    Dave

    This is so great!

I hope Phil will be able to get to California soon, and get together with you to sit once again in his old Custom...

    What a great story.

  5. Congrats Greg........ Very cool story and what a honor to own a real survivor custom from back in the day.You know how much I have always loved your Merc and how cool is it that you have found all this out.

It was in MF 6. I wish I known some of this added history when Evel did the photo shoot.

Cool updates. What a gem the Merc is. Hopefully Phil has pics of the glovebox. Possibly, you can use them to have a pinstriper replicate the Von Dutch original for you.

  22. Thank you sir :) I got your autograph at the 2011 GNRS "Then & Now", had i knew then that Jeffries built it, I sure would had have him sign my article book as well.. Been eagerly following your quest after its history since 2008 :) Looking forward to what's to come of updates and pics!/Olav

When I signed your book I didn't know Dean Jeffries built my merc either.I"m patiently waiting for Phil coming to California and pulling out his pictures. If I get any new info,I will post it.

Barris.jpg A couple of weels ago I got an e-mail from Phil Sauers,he gave me a little more info.My merc was painted blue with a little silver flake added.I always wondered about the Barris Kustoms of America sticker in the window,Phil told me he belonged to this club.He also told me that Pop's gas station that was mentioned in the 30th anniversary of Car Craft was a Shell station at the corner of Soto & Slauson in Huntington Park.Phil also told me he would still give me all the original pic's of the merc when he gets to California he said they belong with the car.

    Great thread.

    WHERE ARE THE CURRENT PHOTOS???

Also, when you get the old photos, make high quality scans of them and keep them off-site so if anything happens, copies survive and the cars history doesn't get lost again. Also, consider video taping the gentlemans stories. Listening alone, you don't pick up on small details. Once you memorize more stuff, the small details become more important.
