I have a 1952 Buick Super with 263 straight eight, the arm that engages the starter motor is not engaging, the solenoid is spinning, If I engage the shaft going into starter by hand starter wile pressing the contacts together from the ignition relay on firewall ( I have the cover off) it will start. But when I turn the car off the solenoid keeps spinning and contacts stay together, have to pry them apart and it stops. Is the solenoid the problem? Is there an aftermarket solenoid that can be used, and what is that shaft coming out of solenoid, is it included with new one? I did convert to 12 volts, so it needs replacing anyways, but not sure if that shaft goes with it. Thanks!
The solenoid spins? I'd like to see a pic of the part, do you have a link to what a stock one looks like (not wanting you to crawl under your car)? I'm just curious on the starter setup...I've no info to add. At least you get a bump to the top now
since you need to have starter set up for 12V system, take it to rebuild shop and they will check everything for you. likely solenoid is the continual spinning problem. call Lone Star Auto Electric.
wait a minute - you started a thread back on 7-19-2012 "1952 Buick Straight 8 Starter Removal" - if you could not figure this out or, have found someone to do the work for you by now do not know what to say. could always search: www.auto-repair-manuals.com or search online for classic car repair shop in Houston or join up with a Buick group
Never replaced or removed it, just it was turning very slow, changed over to 12 volt and that problem stopped. This other problem just started, but I am pretty sure it is the solenoid after talking to some guys that have done the 12 volt conversions, it's a common problem with the 6 volt solenoids afterwards, starter itself should be fine for many , many, years as the wiring inside are a lot thicker then the 12 volt and seem to be quite comfortable with the 12 volt, so I have been told several times. When I say it is spinning , at least that is what it sound like, internally of course, not on the outside.. Yes I agree, its time for a repair manual anyway. Thanks Everyone for he input!
