    Rebuilding my steering box and need some help with the backlash settings or any overall suggestions.

    Trying to take steering box off the car and having trouble. Anyone have diagram or pics on how to remove it.

    The steering box is attached to the column,,you will need to remove the box and column as a unit.
    Possibly this will help,it is from the 52-54 Ford Shop Manual. HRP

    Probably like the '57's...needs to come out thru the inside of the car. The way to tell would be if it has a large firewall opening where the column p***es thru.

    The steering box adjutment itself is pretty easy. You have to drop the pitman arm though and set the pre-load with an inch-lb torque wrench. I can look it up again if you need it.

    My Ford also had that ungodly big plate around the steering column... now I know what its for. Contemplating going with a power steering box, might be easier to do while the car is still apart.

    I have a Fix Your Ford book and will look it up later. I think the pre-load is something like 2-7 in-lbs measured at the steering wheel nut (horn ring off). You adjust the sector screw to get that value and lock it up with the nut.
