I'm looking to get some correct plates for my 52 chevy. I have been told that to do it correctly I need 2 matching plates that are clear. Here's the question: If I find one plate, can I just get a vanity plate to match and put the black plates on so when the man stops me its the same? Has anyone tried this?
Not sure about CA, but here in NC, you can run a vintage plate on your car as long as you have a regular registered plate and carry the plate and registration in the car to show the officer if you get pulled over. I know that for fact because I was pulled over a few weeks ago. He was behind me and pulled me over because he ran my plate. When it didn't come up as registered, he pulled me over. Never did give me a reason why he ran my plate. Your problem is probably harder to solve because you need 2 plates for the car. BTW...there are 3 sets of 1952 CA plates on ebay right now. Search for California tag 1952
In Texas you must have two plates to qualify for use in an Antique Registration if two plates were issued in the year of manufacture. If only one plate was issued, then only one plate is required. But this is Texas, where most laws actually make sense.
I'm trying to do the same thing in NJ. Unfortunately I havent been able to find 2 plates I want to use so its been tough to get answers just yet. Last time I checked into reissuing old plates, they wanted me to pay for the back registration (basically pay for every year between that time and the last time they were actually in use), I laughed and walked out.
you neeed 2 original plates to register a car in the California year of Manufacture license plate program. no fakes allowed.
You definetly need 2 matching original 1951 plates, they let me slide with one tag just for the back. Kevin
Correct. This info from CA DMV website on a pdf file: Steel tab, chrome yellow background with black number 52 for use on lower right-hand corner of rear 1951 plate.
You'll likely need a matching pair of '52 plates to be able to register it if plates were issued in pairs that year. That's the way it is here in Maryland, anyways- although from '52 through '55 Maryland only issued single rear plates. Not sure about Cali on that one. The procedure here requires you to take your plates to the MVA to be inspected and have the numbers checked. If everything checks out alright they issue you a set of new plates with stickers and registration, as well as a registration card for the antique plates. You keep the new plates in your glove box and run the antique ones. Hope this helps.
The CA guys have told you the truth, you need two plates. As for your question about using a vanity plate, the DMV will not issue a vanity plate with numbers that have been on a previously issued plate. There have been some slipped through but usually that was with very early (20's and 30's) plates
So the guy on ebay with the plates I need is in my home town... hopefully I can strike up a deal with him
