I would like some information on matting a 1953 chevy 235 motor to a older cast iron powerglide trans. Was an adapter used between the motor/trans on the original setup? If yes were can this adapter be purchased? Do I need a special flex plate and converter for this setup?
You need the transmission and all the associated parts from a cast iron powerglide that was originally behind a 235. They were different over the years, too, so make sure you get all one year. Early ones didn't work very good, some years had vacuum modulator, others didn't (?), etc. Also you'll need all the linkage to the carb for the throttle valve. Best to find one from a running driving car, if you can. There's not a lot of demand for them. the V8 model is different, it won't bolt to the 6 cyl adapter plate.
The 6 cyl powerglides did have a cast adapter that bolted to the motor before you put the flex plate on. Don't think there is an aftermarket solution. I also don't know if any of the v8 powerglide parts would interchange. Should still be possible to find a 6 cyl unit. May be harder to find someone to rebuild one though. Unless your doing a full on restoration you may want to consider adapting a later trans. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If you want to look up which parts fit which cars, you can find info on some of them here http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/1929_57chevyparts/57cmpc0342.htm but it won't have the 58-62 models, which were (yet again) different from earlier ones.
thanks for all the help. I am working on a plan for a "The Race Of Gentelmen" motor trans setup that calls for complete driveline to be 1953 or older.
