I have a 53 and a 54 frame. The 53 is very nice and the 54 is kind of rusty, however I have a full 54 drivetrain, Y block, 3 speed and such. Can I use a 53 frame with a y block? Or am I stuck fixing the 54 frame? Trying to go the fastest route. Thanks

I dont think they're too different short of the front ends being totally different.

Totally different! 1954 was the first year of the Y-block and first year of IFS so the best way is to swap the '53 body on to the '54 frame which isn't as bad as it sounds because all the mounts for the body are in the same place.

Fords didn't have IFS before '54? Thought it came out ~'49??? But yes the frames are different...

I think the first Fords with independent suspension was '49. Frames are very different from 52-53, and '54. Here's a couple pics from the parts book - sorry for the fuzziness, but you can see the differences:

A lot of good info in the article, but it doesn't change the fact that Ford had IFS before '54, they just changed from kingpins to ball joints. It is a lot of work to get a Y-block into a 52-53 frame because of the placement and shape of the front crossmember.
