Those piles of cars ironically resemble both the housing market and the state of affairs with the auto industries in the detroit area.

F'N Pricks. At least in Portland they used many, many, of these type of cars to build Marine Drive along the Columbia river. With some rip rap of course. These photos make me kinda' ill.

When I was a kid there used to be a stack of cars about 20 x 20 x 30 high. I'm saying 20 cars in each direction and 30 cars high all the way solid through the stack.
Looked like a giant chimmey, neatly stacked! Nice car's too, I figured when I got old enough to drive I'd go there and get one and some part's, but in the two years I waited they were all gone. Found them on a day I was cutting school and thought they were long forgotten.
    Wish I had a picture of that...

  20. What was the point of burning them? If they're off the road...smacks of a stupid propaganda trick.

  21. Now the "Division and Hooker" photo shows the field museum and the Shedd aquarium in the background. (Chicago) This would place the car pile to the east of Soldier Field, possibly on what used to be Meigs field (Lakefront airstrip)
(Northerly Island now). Of course I don't know how old Meigs is.

    Is this the Origional Hunnertcarpileup?????????????????

Quick!!! Now that we know where its at someone fetch a time machine!!!!!!!!

It was by accident, looking for pictures of old Detroit for another thread,.. when I seen these, the bottom of my jaw hit the top of my boots,... I couldn't let this carnage go unmentioned,..... (misery loves company !)

It was like a death sentence,... "cremation" according to one of the signs, besides , it would burn them down to bare metal for re-prossing.

    And I thought I was sick ! :D

  23. Your close Al, I think that looks like the Adler Planetarium, east of the aquarium. So the pileup must have been on the north end of Northerly Island where the Burnam Harbor marina parking lot was built. Some of the photos are from Detroit and some from Chicago...a similar campaign? I wonder if any other major cities' Chevy dealers did the same?

Nice pix. Just a campaign to sell new cars, eh? Besides, old light-weight tin didn't have a chance against the newer and heavier cars and trucks anyway. Remember, the tire mfg and the auto makers conspired to KILL mass transit, too, just to sell more cars. I don't mind the drunk driving deals you see at schools, everyone should know not to drink and drive by now. Cept the bar owners of course and those who collect taxes on booze. Gary

Hey Man it was just an older version of "Cash for Clunkers." Those were just junk cars in their day just like all the junk jap cars we see driving around everyday here in the big city.

Except ....what a loss of good parts. Who will cry if a Civic meets the crusher?

Apparently, the jalopies acted alone in these deaths as no drivers were at fault.

  30. It's all about perspective....yeah, that totally sucks, but those cars weren't worth anything back then...and even if you somehow had a premonition that 50 years in the future they would be worth gold, very few could've stored them that long....

I'm sure someone will be crying 50 years in the future because of all the mustang II's were stripped of their front-ends and crushed.

    Cool pics, thanks for posting.
