Can anyone tell me how to stretch the springs on my '53 Buick hinges? I am not strong enough to just grab them with a hook and pull them on.They are very strong! I tried to use a straight bar and pry them over with "almost" success, but they keep slipping off at the last second!

    Hi,
Get any gm manual from 53-54 and they give the dimensions for a tool to remove them.
If you cant get one I can probably take a photo of mine.

I have not tried it myself but remember a friend saying he used an engine hoist to pull springs on and off.

    Happy wrenching,

  4. the tool is a pipe split down the middle with washers FULLY welded into them spaced apart 2-3inches?
the tool is used like so
    open hood
place tool into spread apart spring.. Do both springs with each half of tool...
clamp around tightly with hose clamps(this will keep the spring stretched partially)
slightlyy close hood until springs will un hook (carfull with these they are SPRING loaded !)
keep hood up and supported now ...as springs are removed
    remove hood

    reverse order for install

tuff now you have em out
so try to install some shims into the extended spring and hope you can get them back out when the spring is hooked back up
you don't need washers spitting out at light speed at your glass - paint or eyes
