I know it sounds stupid but I screwed up the threads on the nut that holds the steering wheel to the colum shaft when removing the wheel. I didnt think it was a big deal until I went shopping for a replacement. No dice, its an odd size thread. Anyone have an idea as to what else I can use that will fit. Thanks for the help
do you have a dial caliper? Measure the O.D. of the thread-it's most likely to be a standard thread for some diameter measured in sixteenths: 7/16-20; 1/2-20; 9/16-18 (this is the only near "*******" thread likely to be found in a domestic car.); 5/8-18. The measured diameter is usually a few thousandthe less than the nominal size.
If it's really ******ed up, you may just have to re-die it...One side under what it was before you started. HellRaiser
I'd remove the wheel and get a set of "needle files" which are a set of small sharp files in a variety of shapes. You may be able to file the ******ed threads straight again. After re-reading your post--- you screwed up the nut? Get thee to a junkyard!
If its the same size as the one on my 56 DeSoto, good luck. Mine was an obsolete thread that is no longer used. There is a guy on egay that sells them but they arent cheap. Try posting an add in the wanted section, worked for me. If memory serves me,(and it usually doesn't),the size is 3/4-20. The finest thread pitch I could find anywhere was -18.
I have been to all the local shops and fastenall and no luck. I cant even find a tap that will work. Tried a few old car junk yards and hopefully should find one. I should of gone easy on the PBR while working on this steering wheel and this wouldn't of happened hahaha. Thanks for the reply everyone
If you are anywhere near Springfiled, M*** there is a 50 Buick Super in the yard that has the wheel intact http://www.randrind.com/default.aspx you might want to give them a shot....... Chuck
