I just swapped out my original headlight switch with a new one from Carquest. There was a wire attached to the old one that had an inline fuse. That wire broke when I took it off of the switch. I'm wondering if I need it? Shop manual made it sound like it went to the ammeter but mine appears to be working?

Also discovered that the tailights only work when the parking lights are on. They won't turn on with the headlights on. Any ideas?

was the switch an exact match? some of them used two power supplies, one for the tail light dash circut, one for the head lights.

It was missing a terminal. Original had 9 places to hook up wires (one that wasn't used). The new one has 8 and the one that was labeled ammeter in my shop manual says AUX on the new switch. I'll try to take and upload a picture.

Did you just hook the wires to the new switch in the same basic positions you found them on the old one? If so you have the park and tail together on the park terminal, dome and brake light switch wires on the taillight terminal. Move the 2 wires now on the taillight terminal to the aux stud and one of the wires on the park terminal to the tail spot, try and see if correct. If not switch those 2 wires (tail and park). Your wire that was fused was possibly something added on the original dome/brake or battery/ammeter position to get battery power. Picture shows how it was originally-
