Hi, I need some help regarding my 1953 Chevy Bel-Air's 6v charging system. The issue is my charging system isn't working even after the following was performed: The generator was fully rebuilt with a NOS GM armature & a NOS Ace part# 319 field coils. New brush springs & brushes. A new BWD Voltage Regulator was installed as well. The wires from the Gen to the Voltage Reg were checked for continuity. The Gen was polarized thru the Reg and I even added a ground wire from the Reg to car frame to see if it made a difference. New Battery was installed as well, I feel like I'm chasing a ghost, where else should I be checking. Anyone's input would be most appreciated. -Victor
First, momentarily jump between Bat. & Field terms on reg. while feeling the gen. pulley. If you can't feel it pulse, the fresh gen. doesn't work. Borrow a generator that works, & try again. New parts sold today for 6 volt systems are nowhere near the quality of the '60s - '70s Delco Remy parts. Seldom do we find D-R starters, generators, or regulators that can't be repaired by a good cleaning & lubing, filing points, turning armatures, etc. unless they're toasted.
Yes, the ammeter on the dash only indicates discharge whenever a light is turned on or a load applied. I did check voltages at several points including the battery while gently accelerating the engine.
