Technical 1953 Chevy Starter??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, Aug 30, 2023.

  1. Is it really that hard to find one of these things anymore? None of my local vendors have it. Truck and car shop doesn't have it. I don't like buying online unless absolutely necessary. Can anyone supply a good part number so I can cross it or run it by my suppliers? Thanks.

Yeah, it's really that hard to find. Welcome to working on 70 year old cars.

If there's an old auto electric place they might have one...but you won't find it at any of the chain parts stores. Restoration parts suppliers that specialize in those cars may have one, expect a hefty core charge.

  3. Heh. yeah. I do it for a living. Its nuts. Every day the parts supply gets thinner and thinner. My local rebuilder has a poor reputation and my good rebuilder is not answering in his phone. I guess ebay it is.

Have fun. I ordered 6 feet of defroster duct hose on ebay, got the box just now it has 3 feet in it.

Are you missing one or have a non-functional unit?
Betcha someone hear has one that could be rebuilt or does it have to be new.

You may have to take a ride to find a decent auto electric shop. I have gone through 4 or 5 over the years. People die, businesses close, etc. The one I use now came to me through a guy at work. They converted my Chevy truck starter to a hi-torque.

  8. From memory GM used the same starter on the Pontiac flathead 6, probably a few more in that era.

He didn’t say if it was a powerglide or stick shift car. Here’s what Hollander says

If you've got a core, and it's not total junk, you're probably best off rebuilding it.

  13. Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I tried calling my old rebuilder today and miracle of miracles, they answered the phone. I thought they were closed, but they must have been out of country.
