Have it rebuilt. I don't monkey with them anymore as they are so old. Chances are it needs everything including things you can't do at home like turning the armature.

It is a fairly big investment so, I hope you are committed to finishing the car.

  2. There is one new pic after getting it home. Not to sure if I’m going to clean her up and polish the paint. I kinda like the just pulled out of a barn or field look. I replaced the coil and didn’t need to so I’m going to put the original back in to keep it looking original and nasty under the hood hah. Appreciate all the help and suggestions guys!

  3. What do you think a shop would charge? We have a starter/alternator specific place in town who does rebuilds. i dont imagine it would cost to much money? I dont want to spent more then $250ish I dont want to have more into the car then what i can sell it for. I just spent 300$ on a master cylinder and all new wheel cylinders

You could ask them. I would guess $100 to $150 but haven't had one done in a while. A local shop is almost sure to do a better job than a chain store rebuild.

If you are thinking of selling the car, don't put any more money into it as it will be a loss to you. Tidy the car up as best you can without spending any more money and sell it for what you can get.

For $100 bucks -go for it! Get the starter fixed. Now you have a car runs/drives -new brakes, someone is much more likely to want that. You did a good job getting it to run...I've found the best I do with all cars: from desirable to heaps and in between is to break even. Usually I'm not even that good. If I have all my receipts, someone will come along and pay me for those, but never my time, tow bills, tax/tags, fixing the same problem twice....cars are a blast & the best hobby there is, but not much of an investment.
