Does anyone know if the heater core in a 1953 Ford Customline comes out from the p***enger compartment or from the engine room? Thanks, Tom
When I replaced the heater core in my '54 Ranch Wagon it came out the front. But the engine was out so it was easy peasy. I could have bought an off shore replacement core but I decided to go with a recore from my local radiator shop. Costs a bit more but I supported a local business and I think the quality was better. Just a thought.
Interesting. So now one say the front, the says the back. Each one requiring a bit of work. When you took out the front engine compartment, were there any issues to be aware of? I prefer to take out by the front for a number of reasons. I do have a replacement core but may opt to have mine repaired. Thanks for your thoughts.
I took my heater out after I already pulled the dash and engine. I’ll try to find the diagram for that part of the dash.
After rechecking my dis***embly photos 51504bat is correct. Comes out engine side. The core bolts to the funnel like piece connected to the blower motor. Pic with arrows shows the core mount locations, 2per side. View attachment 5578043
There is a link in the "Sticky" where a Ford Ranger core is an easy swap in 52-54 Fords and under $50 new. Here it is. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=3610299&cc=1136663&jsn=578&jsn=578
Replacement of the heater core turned out to be a combination of inside/outside procedures. Heater plenum from inside needs to be removed as the core comes out from the p***enger compartment. The core is retained by three screws in the engine room. Best to pull engine room air plenum and retaining ring off to replace the gasket/seal. In any event, a huge job because of the lack of working space in engine room. Have to say that the repop core was an excellent reproduction with proper tabs and aligning screw holes. While the air plenum and heater fan motor was off, I could now take off the valve cover, check the valve lash and replace the gasket which I really needed to do. Also put in some neat spark plug tube seals custom made by Ronnie Roadster that stops oil from getting into the spark plug tubes of an Ardun. Just a few hours of work left to finish it today. This 82 year old really appreciates the help he got from friends doing all of this.
