I used a column out of a GM van. I believe it was late 70's. It had tilt and no key.

You can't use a rack with the stock I beam axle, if that's what you have now. Do you still have the original box and column? Lots of people use the F100 box in other vehicles, pretty stout piece.

i was told you can use a rack with i beam, i saw video on classic trucks ,, they used a bracket to mount it ,, right now i have a toyota power steering kit i dont like it because of the turning ratio (19;1 ) ,, and i have a hiss that i cant get rid of ,, a guy told me that i could go with a smaller steering wheel that would help a little ? i thought i would go to rack with a tilt column and smaller steering wheel

Using a frame- mounted rack with a beam axle will give you horrendous bump steer. Any time the front suspension moves up and down the wheels will steer, and the truck will wander all over. Really NOT a good idea.

I believe the OP is referring to a rack that mounts to the axle itself, not the frame, thus eliminating the bump-steer you described. Mid-fifty sells the conversion, as do others. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to run a slip shaft with this set up.

If you have more $$ than time, an Ididit column is the no brainer choice for tilt. Personally, I hate the look of tilt columns in classics. But hey, to each his own.

You bought an old truck. You like to drive old stuff, right? There is nothing wrong with a stock '53 steering column. Using one will get you were you want to be...

Driving an old truck shouldn't be about looking cool and being convenient. It should be about FEELING cool. It should be about appreciating what came before and the mechanical nature of it all.

    From experience, I say this:

Screw tilt columns, Toyota this and that, and whatever else that might get suggested to you. Grab life by the balls and drive an old truck like it was intended to be driven.

The very suggestion of a tilt column puts a gross taste in my mouth. They are not what this site is about fellas...

The stock steering is great, actually. Get all the tie rods right and the spring shackles tight and it'll steer just fine. These old trucks have been used as trucks and the suspensions are tired. You'll spend less rebuilding what you've got into a good-steering, reliable beast.
