Hi, I'm looking for a little help changing out my motor mounts and have ran into a snag. I have removed all bolts, nuts on the mounts and after jacking up the motor the car raises with the motor. The only place unfortunately that I found to jack the car up is the oil pan. Can anyone help? Thanks, Steve
Sure sounds wierd to me. How about jacking at the front x-member to rise it? Also, is it possible that the exhaust system is hanging up the engine?
There is no place at the x-member to place the Jack. I did not notice it being hung up on the exhaust but I can check that tomorrow.
Was trying to avoid using a cherry picker or an engine puller. But I just thought I could Jack the engine up and I would be ok.
I changed the mounts on my '51 (V8) last year. About the only place to jack it up is the oil pan; just use a large chunk of 2X10 or 2X12. Did you remove the bolts holding the mounts to the water pumps? Removing as many bolts as possible helps in cases like this, plus they have to come out anyway.
Yah I removed the engine mounts top and bottom along with transmission mount but still the car raises with the engine. I used a 4x4 block and jacked it on the oil pan.
That's odd. There are only 4 bolts per side, so it's pretty hard to miss any. Only things I can think of is the exhaust manifold is hanging up on the steering box, or a previous owner did something "funny". I've done this three times in my life and never had this problem. Good luck and let us know what the final outcome is.
Is the engine parted from the trans? Is the radiator out, it should be. Is the starter hanging up on something?
Kiwi 4D may be on to something here. I've never had to remove the radiator, but it may be necessary in some cases because of the lower hoses. If such is the case, I'd consider changing out the water pumps now depending on age and condition. Also, I have never had to remove the transmission mount bolts. Having them out may cause some alignment problems; I'd put 'em back in.
Only thing I can see is maybey the bracket from the trans to the clutch assembly. Two bolts holding bracket to trans.
The car will raise with the engine until the engine weight is off of the springs, maybe 3 or 4". Is that what you are seeing? After that, the engine should lift from the frame.
I had to remove the bracket the holds the clutch return spring. It free the motor up after. Mounts are in finally. Thanks all for your input.
