I’ve got a 1953 Mercury Monterey with the 3 speed w/overdrive. My shift collar, or gear socket as some books call it, is broken. I removed the steering wheel and collar and since no one remanufactures one (that I can find through calling many online old car parts suppliers), I’m going to have a local machinist try and work his magic.

Since the collar was off, I decided to remove the column and clean up the shift arms, since there was so much old grease caked on them and the column that it looked and felt like bondo. Here’s a quick video on how it goes back together, which is the opposite of it coming apart. Hope it helps someone out there who’s contemplating tearing into their column. It was actually quite easy. Enjoy!
