A friend wants to build a gasser. He has a bare frame no suspension. Its all blown apart, he wants to make it a roller frame. No easy way to measure what front axle width he needs to order. Any help would be appreciated.
You could do what I just did...let Google find it for you. Stock track width = Shop manual says: Front 57 3/8 in. Rear 56 9/16 in. Mike
Every 50s and 60s Stude car I've ever had, measured 58 1/2 inch wheel surface to wheel surface measured at the drum where the wheel touches. That isn't "track width" measured at tire tread center, because that changes with the wheels. I use the actual physical width of the rear end itself. I used mid- late 60s Mustang 9s, a 68 Torino 9in was a little snug but worked in the Hawk, My 52 pickup measured 60 drum face to drum face. I used a Maverick 8 inch for quite a few yrs until I switched to a tougher Scout Dana44. The Scout measured 60, and if I remember right, so did the Jeep Wagonaire before they downsized. I never measured the front widths. I know the front ends differ just a little from the rears but never was concerned about front/rear comparison.
