Ah man! That sucks, make those bums pay! You insured it, good:)

Not lost, I'm sure it can be repaired. I know it sucks, but at least it didn't show up looking like a box of peanut brittle :D

cardboard is not the proper packaging material for something valuable and rare....it should have been crated.

It was poorly packed, without a doubt. Foam peanuts are the worst thing to use in packing and the cardboard box looks paper thin.

My UPS guy used to laugh at me for all the overkill I built into my packaging. No doubt they didn't treat your box with the respect it deserves but the original packer looks to have dropped the ball big time on this one.

You might beable to have it restored, I'm not sure where you would begin though. It would be worth it for something that rare.

if that packing is pro, ill eat my fuckin hat...

the shipping company will probably blame the packaging, insurance or not.
i am not sure how id handle this situation because i have never encountered it and nothing i have shipped has ever been damaged so badly.... shame on the seller.

seek out a sculptor or industrial designer... it looks like plaster and can be fixed.

  12. What a shit packing job. Box too small, too flimsy, peanuts can be made to work but doesn't look like enough of them.

I send stuff out all the time - I would have packed that in one fairly tight box, wrapped in plastic and with expanding foam or similar to immobilize it - and then put the whole works into another, bigger box, using newspaper or plastic grocery bags on all sides so the inside box is fairly tight, but has wiggle room if they want to drop kick it or something. Outside box gets taped up with strapping tape, too.

Everything I've shipped with that method - delicate model railroad buildings, antique vaccuum tube radios, I forget what all else - has arrived 100% intact.

The UPS store is mostly low-wage entry level kids who don't know shit about packing stuff except whatever they're taught. You don't pack a fucking piece of plaster in bubble wrap and peanuts.

The only problem you have is if UPS denies the claim due to poor packing - which is possible - your seller is probably going to have to fight it out with the UPS Store outlet itself.

As for what's left of it, I'd suggest putting it back together as best as possible and using some RTV or the like to pull a mold off of it, and make some duplicates.

I shipped 54 Chevy door glass to Alanator TWICE. The first time I packed it and 1 piece was broke, the other was OK. The second time I paid UPS to pack it. Both broke!! Like what has been said, entry wage kids with no idea the abuse these things take.

No, they have a very clear idea of how much abuse the packages take. They just don't care. I have a buddy that works for UPS and he's told me some real horror stories.

if that is the shitty way they were going to pack it they should have shipped it freight.. as in strapped to a pallet.

those peanuts are no good for somethig like that. that needed to be packed tight where it wouldn't move.

I bet I shipped 3000 items on ebay over the years. only broke one item. a peice of trim I should have shipped in one of those tubes. woops.

that sucks. what is it made out of? at least you could maybe salvage it. if there is insurance involved maybe you could work it so you get compensated for the damage but keep the item. a buddy of mine did that with some rare part (maybe an intake???) that arrived damaged. he didn't want to turn the part in and have them toss it in the trash.

This is made out of Plaster by "DUTCH" Darrin.. the designer , Builder of the Kaiser Darrin.. UPS has been told the Car will stay here.. its not going any where.. They have said over the Phone that there in the wrong.. but an Investigator for UPS wants to view the Package as it sits. thats why the pictures are of the Contents in the Box... they have been told they just destroyed a Piece Of American History..

That sucks, it looks like they used as their break time soccer ball.

My daughter works for one of the national (international?) box stores that does a huge online business as a call center problem solver. Half of her work is calling UPS on claims on broken flat screen tv sets.

  20. Wow! What a terrible packing job. That is the "I don't care how well I box this, I'm going out drinking in an one hour!" packing job. Packing peanuts are only good for littering highways and areas around dumpsters. Whenever I receive a box that has packing peanuts I think someone is trying to insult me. Chex-mix new flavor, peanuts and broken glass.

Wow man, that's a true shame. I'm amazed you found that piece to begin with. If you can't find someone to restore it I would give it a shot. Looks like you have nothing to lose.

Edit - Just so you know I have an Industrial Design degree and have built a lot of product appearance models. I think I might be able to save it for you.

Don't give up. Go see your dentist and get some of his mold making supplies, and you can fix all that, and maybe make a nice fiberglass copy as well. Sell the fiberglass copies on the red-neck hillbilly thing called eBay...

Don't try and restore it yourself. I have included some sites you should study before you take any further steps.
I am suggesting you plan this carefully.
Start by researching everything you can about the car and the designer. Collect as much information on the designer as you can find. Every little bit is important.
The insurance company took the gamble to cover it,it is now up to you to force them to restore it as new condition. Do not accept anything less.

Consider this car as a peice of Art and as such you need to get an INDEPENDENT Appraisal from an ART CONSERVATOR.
Art conservation is the only method to consider.anything else will devalue the ARTIFACT,which is what you have, broken or not.
DO NOT accept any offer from UPS,they are a billion dollar company, you are a drop of water in the ocean to them so be prepared for a long fight but make sure you win!.
Think of it in the manner that would a Million dollar chinese vase ,and they fucked up when they packed it in a box instead of a crate and then allowed it to be carried without care by some dumbfuck courier.
( i get angry when I see this sort of thing,I had a mercedes diesel shipped to me which got dropped and destroyed, mega dollar engine scrapped.....the cnuts paid though. )

    This link is most important.

The story behind this car is the gentleman had aquired this in 1955 from the Experimental showroom of Kaiser/Willys at the Shutdown . this was the tailend of Kaiser.. one of the last items to leave the Plant.. the Gentleman had it on his bookcase from 1955 till 2 years ago.. when he passed on .. Im the second owner sort of speaking.. Im just like all of you guys.. I love cars, always have.. when I seen this it was a Must have.. when the story was told to me about its little history.. I felt kinda honored to have a piece of that history. it breaks my heart to see that I could not prevent the carelessness . I am at a loss , and have been for 2 days now.. in the one picture of the Experimetal room in the Upper right Corner sits on a table , this car.. I know there are a Kaiser Frazer and Jeepster Collectors that knew about the car. I asked for moreinfo ,, but there being pretty tight lipped.. I will go back to the Estate and ask for all documents pretaining to this if theres any left..

I put My Trust in a Shipper.. That failed. No matter who the employee was that worked behing the counter..

That is a shame. It should not have been accepted by the shipping company with such an obviously inferior packing job.
As a plaster object it must have significant weight. It was probably shifting around in that crappy box like a watermelon on a paper plate.

In my opinion, if a shipper can make many demands about required dimensions and markings of packages, he should also be bound in responsibility to REJECT inadequately packed items.

  28. The shipping company did the packaging!!
