used to have a nice `51 3/4 ton [longbed] and i was thinking about doing the same thing. i think you really need to put it on a 1/2 ton chassis and cut the bed to the proper length. the truck would ride like a log wagon - short wheel base STIFF springs.

can shorten frame & bed if you can get exact measurements from short bed but, easier if you can just find 1/2 ton - don't forget needing correct length driveshaft - nice paint on truck that you are looking at likely be hard to match once you do mods. chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/54index.htm

Also keep in mind the 54 style bed was used into the 60's. Pre 54 was not the same.

I've never quite understood why one would convert a long box 3100 to a short box. They made a billion of them and they're in every other cow pasture from Anaheim to B.C.
Not trying to be an ass, just wondering what I'm missing?

  8. ...there ain't a "billion" of em left in this part of the midwest...

I've got a 1950 5 widow 1/2 ton. I can't go anywhere in it without someone asking to buy it, I've been offered quite a bit for it several times.

There aren't many left around here, and very few are 1/2 tons.

Wrong. The 54 bed is a one year only (55 1st series included) bed. The new 55 Taskforce came out with a new style bed.
