So I did some searching through the archives before I ordered parts and didn't get a firm answer on whether the '54 chevy tail lights would bolt right up to my '53. Well I guess I got my answer when I took it all apart. LOL. You DO need to purchase the '54 Chevy backing plate to match up with the bezel and lenses. As you can see below the '53 backing plate won't fit with the '54 ***embly. I hope that helps someone to not make the same mistake I did. Also, I put the upper and lower lenses together and I noticed there is a pretty big gap between the two in the middle. Is there supposed to be something filling this gap, or is that how it is? See pictures below. I have the red brake lense, and white backup lense on the bottom.
post up in the cl***ifieds. Those are plentiful, and can be had fairly cheap.I think there is a little chrome strip and divider that fills that gap.
yeah, you need the 54 guts too..but than it will all fit just fine in the hole..as far as the "gap" i think there is a shield, so that the light from the running and brake light, and the back up light are seperated so one doesnt shine into the others lense, and a little stainless trim strip
Just in case someone searches this in the future, I found the '54 backing plate at belairautoparts.com, and the chrome divider at chevsofthe40s.com. Man changing out these lights is pretty damn expensive when you add it all up!
