Hello everyone! I recently bought a 54 chevy bel air, runs and drives. I heard a little bit of whining in the transmission, so I thought I'd check the oil in the gear box. It was super thick, as I'm sure is normal, but it had almost a grey color to it. Do you think the transmission is about shot? 20210306_130811.jpg

Stick or automatic? A 3 speed stick takes 80/90 gear oil. Makes me wonder if someone hasn't used some sort of snake oil in that trans to quiet it down.

I see air bubbles more than gray. The gray may mean trans has been sitting for sometime and condensation formed inside trans case and now has mixed in with gear lube.

I think you just have condensation mixed with your gear oil. ***uming a 3 speed manual trans. Just dump out the old gear oil and refill with new 80/90 gear oil. Then a nice long drive to get things heated up and drive off any residual moisture.

Totally agree with 38Chevy454. Didn't see any br*** or metal sparkles so that's a good sign.

I believe you should use GL-3 or4, a lot of the newer 80/90W is not for use in older transmissions.
Just be careful and get the right oil!

I use StaLube GL-4 in my older manual transmission cars.

You're probably correct. I think the old car had sat around for quite a while before I bought it, so it's very likely the oil just has some condensation in it. Looks like I'll be changing the gear oil soon. Thanks for the advice! All I knew was that it didn't look right, and thought I'd see what some others thought about it
